Opel Astra facelift brings new look and better range

The SUV is king of the road in Europe, dominating sales charts and making life tough for the classic hatchback. Yet, the appeal of a sleek, practical compact car refuses to die. Opel has an extensive lineup of popular crossovers, but the brand knows that the humble hatchback still matters. That is why the sixth-generation Opel Astra, which debuted in 2021, just received a mid-lifecycle update designed to sharpen its look and strengthen its position against both its sibling models and the entire SUV segment.

Opel focused its attention on the front of the vehicle, making the facelift instantly recognizable. The update brings a sharper overall design, highlighted by a bold new lighting signature. The Opel Vizor grille, now a core part of the brand's identity, gains broader LED elements that frame the central, illuminated Opel Blitz badge. The company calls this fresh face the "Opel Compass" - a design cue destined for the rest of the lineup.

Designers also redesigned the front bumper, which now features glossy black trim between the air intakes, giving the car a sportier and more modern feel. The profile and rear bodywork remain mostly unchanged, but new 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels add a fresh, high-end finishing touch.

The Astra lineup sticks to its dual-body format: the standard five-door hatchback and the practical Sports Tourer wagon. The European hatchback segment is famously tough, with the Astra locked in a battle for buyers against the VW Golf, VW ID.3 and Peugeot e-308. In the wagon category, the Sports Tourer faces stiff competition from models such as the Peugeot 308 SW, the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, and the Skoda Octavia Combi, all fighting for consumers who prioritize cargo space without stepping up to an SUV.

Inside the cabin, Opel is bringing upgrades focused on comfort and usability. The critically acclaimed, ergonomically designed Intelli-Seats are no longer reserved for high-spec models; they now come standard across the entire range. These seats offer enhanced comfort and support, which is a major win for all buyers. The upholstery uses a recycled and recyclable material called ReNewKnit. Buyers can also specify these advanced seats with multi-stage heating, electro-pneumatic lumbar support, massage functions, and memory settings.

The dashboard keeps the familiar dual 10-inch displays, but Opel promises the cockpit and user interface for the infotainment system are now "clearer and more intuitive," making for a less distracting experience behind the wheel.

With the refresh, the Astra Electric gets a key upgrade in both range and capability. The electric motor delivers 115 kW (154 hp) of power, and the EV version now benefits from a larger 58-kWh battery pack, adding 21 miles to the range for a total of 282 miles on a full charge. The Astra Electric now supports V2L (Vehicle to Load) functions, allowing owners to use the car's large battery to charge external devices like e-bikes or tools, and making the EV more useful than ever for weekend trips or work.

The facelifted Opel Astra is entering a field where competition remains intense. Segment veterans like the Ford Focus and Renault Megane have left the compact car segment, but the challenge from the VW Golf, Peugeot 308, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai i30 is still strong. Opel plans to debut the refreshed Astra at the Brussels Motor Show on January 9. Final pricing and specific market availability will be confirmed closer to the vehicle's European launch.
