Renault

Renault and Qualcomm have been partnering in the development of software for EV cars for a few months now, but it seems that the two companies want to take things one step further. They join forces to develop a centralized platform architecture for Software-Defined Electric Vehicles. Qualcomm also pledges to invest in Renault's new electric and software company called Ampere.

Renault and Qualcomm to co-develop a software platform for EVs

The so-called SDV platform aims to bring together all vehicle systems in one place. Unlike Android Auto, which focuses on the infotainment, SDV will also take control of the whole cockpit, connectivity, telematics, Power Line Communications, safety, cybersecurity and even advanced driver assistance (ADAS). Everything will rely on a single Physical Computer Unit (PCU), manufactured by Qualcomm.

According to Renault and Qualcomm, this will inevitably cut production costs and make the whole in-vehicle experience more streamlined, centralized and immersive. The interesting bit is that SDV will be made available for other car manufacturers as well.
