Renault Announcement

Renault has given its Megane E-Tech electric car an upgrade, adding a new sporty version and improving its charging capabilities. Gone is the 40 kWh 130 hp EV40 version and the Megane E-Tech now comes in a single EV60 version and three trims: Techno, Esprit Alpine, and Iconic. The big news is the introduction of the Esprit Alpine, a trim that adds a touch of athletic style to the already popular EV. Oh - and the prices are lower as well.

The Esprit Alpine stands out with its exclusive Matte Shadow Grey paint, dark-tinted 20-inch wheels, and blacked-out logos. Inside, the seats feature a unique fabric made from recycled materials, with blue stitching and a French flag badge, highlighting Renault's partnership with Alpine. The dashboard and console also get a sporty treatment with black and blue accents.

Apart from aesthetics upgrades, Renault has enhanced the Megane E-Tech's technology. The regenerative braking system, controlled by paddles on the steering wheel, now includes a "One Pedal" mode. This feature allows drivers to speed up and slow down using only the accelerator pedal, making city driving smoother and more efficient. It also reduces brake wear and helps extend the car's driving range by capturing more energy.

All Megane E-Tech models now come standard with an 11 kW bidirectional charger. This means the car can receive power and also send it back. With an optional adapter, the Megane E-Tech can power household appliances or charge other devices. In France, using a special home charger and electricity contract, the car can even feed energy back into the power grid, potentially lowering electricity bills for owners.

Renault also made charging simpler with the upcoming Plug & Charge feature. This system, which will be integrated into the Mobilize Charge Pass, allows drivers to charge their car at compatible charging stations without needing a membership card or payment card. Simply plug in, and the car takes care of the rest. The Mobilize Charge Pass provides access to a large network of charging points across Europe.

The Megane E-Tech remains a compact hatchback with the spirit of a sports car, thanks to its dynamic chassis and low center of gravity. It's powered by a 220-horsepower motor and a battery that provides up to 291 miles of range on a single charge. In France, the Techno trim starts at $46,300, the Esprit Alpine at $48,600, and the Iconic at $50,400. That’s significantly lower than before - the cheapest EV40 version used to start from $49,200, and you needed at least $53,900 to get the more capable EV60.

Instead of focusing on more "features" car makers need to focus on making EVs affordable, how about no new features just reduce the price 25-50% for the same features, that would increase sales and market share far more than any useless new...

Also, not bad at being a car, according to owners of the previous year version. Bigger battery option would be nice to compete with the likes of EV3 and Elroq, but then again, 60 kWh should be enough for most users, 80 kWh is more against anxiety tha...
