Rivian buys ABRP and upgrades its route planning

Rivian

Rivian officially concluded the purchase of Internio, the Swedish company behind the A Better Route Planner software. ABRP is the world’s most popular EV route planner and offers a very clever, simple, and intuitive solution for electric car drivers. It calculates the best routes based on the vehicle, and it finds the best EV chargers along the route - all without the need for a complicated setup.

Rivian is already implementing the ABRP into its own trip planning, with the upgraded software already being pushed to all Rivian vehicles. R1T and R1S owners will have far more control over trip planning with the option of finding the best route in the mobile app and then sending it to the car.

In our latest mobile app & software update: enhanced trip planning powered by ABRP. Plan a trip on your Rivian mobile app, send the plan to your vehicle and head out, like we did with @BayAreaRivians to drive to the top of Mount Diablo for sunset.🗺👈🛻🌄https://t.co/6eOIggbPVs pic.twitter.com/FCWRoCVO2b

Each vehicle will have its data already preinstalled in the planner, all the driver has to do is type the destination. The new ABRP-powered planner will work out the route based on the distance, current battery charge, and the vehicle’s range. It will find the best chargers along the route and it will work out the fastest charging routine. It will even ask how much charge the driver wants to have in the vehicle on arrival - clever stuff.

It’s a big improvement for any vehicle to use ABRP, Polestar was the first to seize the opportunity and ABRP is available in its vehicles preinstalled. It will be interesting to see how the change of ABRP ownership affects Polestar owners and other EV users. Rivian ensures the software will be constantly improved and will remain available to everyone.

When ABRP first came to market it was like a breath of fresh air, it changed every EV trip from a logistical nightmare to a relaxed adventure. EV owners no longer need to worry about working out range, looking for suitable chargers, or planning stops along the route. They simply need to put into the software the make and model of the EV, and ABRP works it all out in seconds.
