Smart

After many sightings of camouflaged prototypes, the Smart #5, a collaboration between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, finally makes its grand entrance. Recently revealed by Chinese regulators, this all-electric SUV boasts impressive specifications, curious design and is set to make an impression in the EV space.

First unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April as a concept, the Smart #5 has now transitioned into its production-ready form. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has published details about the SUV, showcasing four distinct color options and an impressive four powertrain variants.

While classified as a mid-size SUV, the Smart #5 is anything but small. With dimensions of 15.4 ft in length, 6.2 ft in width, and 5.6 ft in height, it offers ample space for both passengers and cargo. Its wheelbase spans 9.5 ft, further emphasizing its spacious interior. The SUV is designed to accommodate five passengers comfortably and has wheel options ranging from 18 to 21 inches. For the top-tier trim level boasting 638 horsepower, the curb weight stands at a rather substantial 5,401 lb.

The Smart #5 offers a diverse range of powertrain options, catering to different preferences and needs. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) models come equipped with a single motor, delivering either 335 hp or 358 hp. For those seeking enhanced performance, the all-wheel drive (AWD) variants feature dual motors, generating a combined power output of 579 hp or an astonishing 638 hp in the Brabus-branded trim.

The RWD versions use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, while the AWD trims opt for nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery packs. While the exact battery capacity remains undisclosed, previous reports suggest an impressive range of 435 miles based on the CLTC standard.

Charging capabilities are also a highlight for the Smart #5. It boasts an 800 V architecture and 4C-rated charging, enabling a theoretical full charge in as little as 15 minutes. This rapid charging feature will appeal to EV enthusiasts seeking minimal downtime during long journeys.

Smart, a joint venture between Geely Group and Mercedes-Benz, has established itself as a prominent player in the European EV market, particularly in Germany. While its performance in the Chinese market has been less stellar, the Smart #5 hopes to change that with its impressive features and performance.

The only thing missing - the pricing. This will be revealed closer to the official debut, together with international availability. The Chinese market will likely be the first to get the Smart #5, but Europe won’t be far behind.
