THK

A surprise player from the land of the rising sun has thrown its hat in the EV ring. Meet the LSR-05, birthed by the Japanese machinery company THK.

The LSR-05 name stands for “Luxury, Sport, and Revolution” with "05" indicating that this is the fifth generation of vehicles developed by this Japanese powerhouse.

The LSR-05 is a crossover four-seater coupe. For those of you squinting your eyes and thinking, "Isn't that similar to the Model X in size?" – you're spot on. At 196.7 inches in length and 77.4 inches wide, it mirrors the dimensions of Tesla's creation but stands a tad shorter, at 60.2 inches.

The LSR-05 flaunts video cameras replacing the traditional side mirrors. The rear doors are rear-hinged - an old-school touch with a modern twist. Inside, passengers are greeted by a full-width digital dashboard, featuring displays for side mirrors, an instrument cluster, and seemingly dual screens for entertainment and the front passenger.

What's truly intriguing is THK's "stealth seat slide system." The company has utilized its proprietary linear motion guides, leading to a more compact seating setup.

Under the hood (well, technically under the car) lies the heart of the LSR-05. Two 800-volt, 93-kilowatt variable magnetic flux in-wheel motors sit at the rear, accompanied by a robust 220 kW motor up front. The power comes from a high-voltage battery that supports wireless charging, although no specifics were provided there. The car also boasts four-wheel steering, adaptive suspension with variable ride height, and a unique electric braking system that offers independent control of all four brakes.

Those itching to see this concept beauty in the flesh can mark their calendars for the upcoming Japan Mobility Show, which will kick off on October 25.

Now, if you've been daydreaming about the day you can cruise down the highway in an LSR-05, we hate to burst your bubble. Unfortunately, this beauty is not slated for production. THK's intention isn’t to enter the EV market, but rather to showcase its capabilities. For this design marvel, we tip our hats to SN Design Platform, owned by Shiro Nakamura, previously the Senior Vice President of Design at Nissan.

Very interesting concept 🤔. All the major EV producers should take notes. The most efficient and space saving inwheel electric motors will be the way to go in the future. The wireless charging capability also has huge future potential. Congratulation...
