US EV market posts record sales in Q1, driven by California

The US saw a record-breaking first quarter of 2022 with a total of 208,411 EVs sold. That brings the total of electric vehicles sold in the US since 2011 to more than 2 and half million cars.

As usual, it was California's high EV adoption rate that spurred growth. California saw 81 thousand EVs sold in Q1, close to 40% of the total US EV sales during that time. California's electric car sales are 33% higher than in Q4 of 2021 and 29% higher than in Q1 of 2021.

The US still lags behind in EV adoption compared to the EU and China, which could be due to a few things. For starters, the pickup truck market is only now starting to get electrified by the likes of Rivian R1T and Ford's F-150 Lightning. The other reason is poorer government incentives.

As usual US sales were dominated by Tesla, which accounts for around 75% of all EVs sold in the US this quarter.
