2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 unveiled - bigger battery, more buttons and new N Line trim

Hyundai

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is receiving a major upgrade for 2024. This revamp includes a significant battery expansion and a sleek new sports variant that hopes to give the Tesla Model Y some serious competition.

For starters, the Ioniq 5 is ditching its smaller 77.4 kWh battery pack for a much larger 84 kWh option. This means you should get significantly more range on a single charge - how much exactly, Hyundai is keeping quiet about for now. Quick napkin math suggests we are looking at an extra 8.5% capacity which should translate to an extra 22 miles of range for the AWD model and nearly 26 miles for the RWD version. Not really revolutionary but we’ll take it.

The good news doesn't stop there. Hyundai has also made several modifications to the Ioniq 5's exterior. These changes give the car a more refined, futuristic look while simultaneously improving its aerodynamics – good for range and overall efficiency.

The most exciting part of the update is perhaps the introduction of a new sporty option: the Ioniq 5 N Line. Think of it as Hyundai's attempt to offer buyers who want extra pizzazz an answer to the Tesla Model Y Performance - but apparently without any actual extra performance. Aggressive bumpers, stylish side skirts, and unique 20-inch wheels differentiate this N Line from the standard Ioniq 5. Sporty elements carry over to the interior with dedicated seats, an N-branded steering wheel, and red contrast stitching.

Underneath all the glitz, the enhanced Ioniq 5 includes a host of new features aimed at both safety and convenience. These include remote parking, better lane-keeping technology, and even a digital key that works with your smartphone. But, here's the best part: Hyundai is adding some much-requested features that were oddly missing from earlier models – think a rear window wiper and an entire row of buttons for most used functions. No more scrolling through numerous menu levels to find heated or ventilated seats. Now that sounds like Hyundai may have been paying attention to what people were actually saying.

The updated Ioniq 5 also features notable upgrades to its technology and safety systems. Hyundai's next-generation Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system is now onboard, promising better integration and user-friendliness. The Ioniq 5 finally offers wireless over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing for seamless updates to maps, software, and vehicle systems without the need for dealership visits.

For increased safety, Hyundai has included its latest Hands-On Detection (HOD) steering wheel tech, advanced Lane Keeping Assist 2, enhanced remote parking capabilities, and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist for all those tricky maneuvers.

The pricing details for the enhanced Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5 N Line haven't been released. While there's still a lot more we need to learn about the new Ioniq 5 and the N Line – like how far it can go on a single charge – Hyundai's enhancements have undoubtedly breathed new life into the Ioniq 5.
