BMW and Rimac join forces to power the new all-electric i7

The automotive world is talking as two very different companies team up for a major project. BMW, the famous German carmaker, is working with Rimac Technology from Croatia. Together, they are building a new version of the all-electric BMW i7, showing that even the biggest names in the car business need a little help from tech experts to stay ahead.

The new project focuses on a better way to store energy. BMW is using its "Gen6" technology for this car. The company wants the BMW i7 to go further on a single charge and fill up its battery faster. By working with Rimac Technology, BMW is making sure its top-of-the-line sedan stays at the front of the pack. It is a big deal when a luxury giant like BMW asks a younger company like Rimac to help with its most important EV.

The secret to this new power system is a battery called a 4695 lithium-ion cylindrical cell. The cell is 1.81 inches wide and 3.74 inches tall. These new cells are a big step up from the older "Gen5" versions - they have 20 percent higher energy density. In simple terms, this means BMW can fit 20 percent more energy into the same amount of space. For people who drive electric cars, this is great news. It means the car can travel many more miles before it needs to stop for a charge.

Range is not the only thing getting better. Owners of the new BMW i7 will also spend less time waiting at charging stations. The new technology allows the battery to take in electricity much faster than before. Usually, charging a massive luxury car can take a while, but this new setup cuts that time down significantly.

BMW knows that its customers do not like to wait. The Gen6 technology increased the charging capacity, making the BMW i7 a much more practical choice for long road trips. You can plug it in, grab a quick coffee, and be back on the road with plenty of power.

Rimac used to be known only for making incredibly fast and expensive supercars. Now, they are becoming a major part of the electric car world. They are a "Tier 1" supplier, which means they make parts directly for big brands. Mate Rimac, the head of the company, says that working with BMW is exciting because BMW always pushes engineering to the limit.

The two companies worked together to unlock the full potential of the new battery cells in record time. Rimac is building these high-voltage systems at its brand-new Rimac Campus in Croatia. From there, the batteries are sent to the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany - the only factory in the world where the BMW 7 Series is put together.

The all-new i7 will be part of the BMW "Neue Klasse" rollout. The company is taking the newest tech and putting it into the entire lineup, starting with this luxury sedan. Dr. Thomas Engelhardt from BMW says the teamwork with Rimac is a great example of European companies working together to lead the world in technology.

The world will get its first look at the new BMW i7 very soon, with the official world premiere set for April 22, 2026, at the Auto China show in Beijing. This is one of the biggest car shows on the planet, making it the perfect place to show off a high-tech German cruiser with a Croatian heart.
