BYD introduces new Bao 8 SUV, the Super 9 and Super 3 concepts

BYD Fang Cheng Bao

BYD, China's undisputed electric vehicle leader, continues its aggressive expansion with the unveiling of three head-turning new models under its premium sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao.

Bao 8 Bao 8

Headlining this trio is the Bao 8, a production-ready SUV that draws inspiration from BYD's sleek Super 8 concept. The Bao 8 flaunts a design the company describes as channeling elements from a future starship, though thankfully, it steers clear of overly outlandish styling. This crossover SUV rides on BYD's bespoke DMO hybrid architecture, and promises off-road prowess inside a premium SUV. While precise technical specifications weren't announced, expect a range of potent hybrid powertrains.

Joining the Bao 8 are two concepts that showcase Fang Cheng Bao's bolder ambitions. The Super 3 imagines the brand's upcoming Bao 3 SUV with more aggressive styling featuring a fighter-jet-inspired look.

Finally there's the show-stopping Super 9 concept. This low-slung Speedster takes the form of a two-seat sports car with a futuristic wraparound cockpit canopy and bold aerodynamic lines. These concepts offer a glimpse into future Fang Cheng Bao models destined to compete in more specialized segments of the EV market.

The Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand's emphasis on design and exclusivity signals a concerted effort to attract affluent buyers. The strategy mirrors successful transitions made by rivals, such as Hyundai's creation of the Genesis brand. With global EV sales on the rise, this move is perfectly timed to elevate BYD past its image as a builder of value-focused EVs.

The new Fang Cheng Bao lineup will be showcased at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show, giving the public their first look at these promising new vehicles. BYD is forecasting a massive sales increase for 2024, targeting over 3.63 million vehicles after a record-breaking 2023. The Fang Cheng Bao brand and its focus on premium cars are crucial to BYD's global ambitions.
