Cadillac's electric SUVs beat official estimates in real world range test

For anyone considering an electric car, one number often stands out above all others: range. How far an EV can travel on a single charge is a top concern for buyers, and automakers rely on official estimates from the EPA and WLTP to advertise these figures. Until now, we all knew that those estimates are usually optimistic and need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

In a surprising twist, recent real-world tests show these numbers might be more of a conservative suggestion than a hard limit, especially for Cadillac's newest electric cars. Two of the brand's latest electric SUVs, the Cadillac Optiq and Vistiq, were put through their paces in independent testing, and both delivered more driving distance than their official ratings promised.

This is good news for consumers who are wary of whether electric vehicles can handle their daily driving needs and long-distance trips without constant anxiety. It seems Cadillac decided to under-promise and over-deliver - a truly refreshing approach in the EV market.

The smaller of the pair is the 2025 Cadillac Optiq. The tested Sport 2 trim comes with an 85 kWh battery pack and an official EPA range of 302 miles. In a real-world driving test conducted by Edmunds, the Optiq sailed past that number with ease, achieving an impressive 339 miles. That's a 12% increase, or an extra 37 miles of driving. The vehicle also proved more efficient than advertised, using 29.8 kWh of energy per 100 miles, compared to its EPA rating of 33 kWh per 100 miles.

To give a sense of its size, the Cadillac Optiq comes in at 190 inches long, 75 inches wide, and 65 inches tall. These dimensions make it larger than the popular Tesla Model Y, which measures 187 inches long, 76 inches wide, and 64 inches tall. The similar footprint means buyers looking at one will likely consider the other, making the Optiq's real-world range a significant selling point.

For families needing more space, Cadillac offers the larger, three-row Vistiq. This electric SUV is designed to slot between the midsize Lyriq and the colossal Escalade IQ. The tested Vistiq 900 E4 model uses a larger 102 kWh battery and comes standard with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system. Its official EPA range is a solid 305 miles.

But just like its smaller sibling, the Vistiq outperformed expectations in real-world conditions, traveling 334 miles on a single charge. This 9% bump shows that even Cadillac's larger EVs are engineered to go an extra few miles.

The consistent performance across these two models is no accident. Both the Optiq and Vistiq, along with the rest of GM's electric lineup, are built on the company's Ultium platform. This flexible battery and motor architecture is the foundation of the brand's push into electric vehicles, and it seems to be working rather well. Cadillac recently reported its best first-half sales figures since 2008, driven largely by its growing family of EVs.
