Not keen on letting Hyundai steal all of the spotlight today, Citroen has unveiled the e-C4 X crossover, which it bills as a fusion of "fastback elegance" with "4-door finesse" and "a twist of SUV attitude".
We're not even going to try to translate any of those terms from marketing speak to actual English, but we will say this: it does in fact have four doors, and you can't necessarily call it a sedan because of the ride height - although it doesn't sit as high as an SUV either. So maybe Citroen's PR team was onto something after all.
The e-C4 X is slotted in between the C4 hatchback and the flagship C5 X in Citroen's portfolio and comes with a 100 kW / 136 hp motor with 260 Nm of torque driving the front wheels, as well as a 400V 50 kWh battery that enables 360 km (223 miles) of WLTP range. 0-100 km/h (0 to 62mph) is achieved in 9.5 seconds when in Sport mode, and the top speed is 150 km/h (93 mph).
Charging tops out at 100 kW DC, and at such a rate you're getting around 10km (6.2 miles) of range per minute of charging. Going to 80% takes 30 minutes. 7.4 kW wall boxes are supported and take 7.5 hours to charge the car with a single-phase supply or 5 hours with a three-phase supply and the optional 11 kW on-board charger. The battery warranty is 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or eight years for 70% of capacity.
The car is 4.6m (181") long, 1.8m wide (70.9"), 1.525m tall (60") and has a wheelbase of 2.67m (105"). The drag coefficient is 0.29, and the boot / trunk capacity is 510 l.
The e-C4 X is fitted with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension, which uses two progressive hydraulic bump stops in conjunction with the shock absorber and spring on each corner of the vehicle. This allowed Citroen engineers greater freedom to tune the setup to achieve the brand's famous "magic carpet ride" effect.
On the inside, you have 16 open or closed storage compartments adding up to a total capacity of 39 l, and there's even a retractable system built into the dashboard and designed to hold a tablet, should you find that the 10-inch infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard is too small for you. There's also a 5.5" driver display and a projector type color Head-up Display. The e-C4 X supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The new EV will be made at the Stellantis Villaverde facility in Madrid, Spain for all markets. There's also an ICE version, but only the EV will be offered in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Nordic markets, Portugal, and the UK. Deliveries should start this fall. Pricing is yet to be announced.
