Opel is stepping into the all-wheel-drive EV market with the Grandland Electric AWD. The new Grandland addresses a pain point for many electric cars: the ability to tow something substantial, like a jet ski or a small boat, without a fuss.
The Opel Grandland Electric AWD has an electric motor on each axle, providing all-wheel drive and a combined system output of 239 kW, or about 325 horsepower. More importantly for pulling tasks, the system generates up to 375 lb-ft of torque. This muscle allows the SUV to accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph in a respectable 6.1 seconds.
Drivers can change the vehicle's response using four distinct driving modes: 'Normal' for daily driving, 'Eco' for maximizing range, 'Sport' for a more direct feel from the steering and accelerator, and '4WD' for continuous power distribution to all four wheels for optimal grip on slippery surfaces.
The electric SUV is rated to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 2,976 lb, making it a viable option for those looking to haul recreational equipment for a weekend getaway. To simplify the process, the vehicle has a specialized safety system, an ESP function with Trailer Stability Management (TSM), designed to counteract any swaying from the trailer while on the move.
Of course, for any electric vehicle, range and charging are critical questions. The Opel Grandland Electric AWD comes with a lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 73 kWh. For the top-tier Ultimate trim, Opel states a range of up to 300 miles on a full charge, based on the WLTP cycle. Future lower trim levels are expected to offer a slightly higher range of up to 311 miles. The Grandland can recharge its battery from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes at a DC fast-charging station.
Inside, the Grandland Electric AWD is designed to function as a comfortable family vehicle. It seats up to five people, with the driver and front passenger getting ergonomically certified Intelli-Seats designed for long-haul comfort. The dashboard is dominated by a large 16-inch infotainment screen, and a clever "Pixel Box" in the center console provides a transparent storage spot with built-in wireless smartphone charging.
For luggage, pets, and gear, the vehicle offers 17.1 ft³ of cargo space. This can be expanded to 55.8 ft³ by folding down the 40:20:40 split rear seats. To ensure the ride remains smooth whether the SUV is empty or fully loaded with a trailer in tow, the Opel Grandland Electric AWD comes standard with Frequency Selective Damping. It provides softer damping over bumpy surfaces, and firms up for a more connected, sporty feel during dynamic driving on smoother roads.
Opel also bundles the vehicle with an "Electric All In" package, which includes a home wallbox charger, route planning functions, and an eight-year warranty for the battery and roadside assistance. It will be interesting to see how Opel prices its latest SUV once it becomes available for order.
