Nio

Nio's upcoming sub-brand Firefly has the entire auto world talking, and a recent spy photo has given us a glimpse inside the brand's first model. The image circulating on the Chinese social media platform Weibo reveals an interior design that's very much in line with Nio's design language, but there are some key changes.

The spy photo shows a light-colored interior, a familiar steering wheel design consistent with current Nio models, and a dashboard featuring two screens. The difference we spot immediately is the orientation of the center screen. Unlike the vertical screens found in existing Nio vehicles, the Firefly model has a horizontal screen, similar to the one in Onvo L60.

This shift towards horizontal screens is not exclusive to Firefly. Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li recently announced that upcoming Nio models and facelifts, beginning in the second quarter of this year, would also feature this design change.

Nio officially launched the Firefly brand at Nio Day 2024 last December. The brand is designed to compete with premium small car manufacturers like Mini and Smart, and it targets a global market. The first Firefly model is a premium boutique small electric car. Pre-sales in China began on December 21st, with a starting price of RMB 148,800 (approximately $20,360).

The latest filing with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) offered some key specifications for the Firefly model. The five-seater measures 157.6 inches in length, 70.1 inches in width, and 61.3 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 103 inches. It weighs in at 3,289 lb and has a top speed of 93 mph.

The Firefly is powered by a 105 kW electric motor from XPT, Nio's electric motor division. Interestingly, the MIIT filing also revealed that the Firefly uses LFP batteries from Sunwoda, marking the first time Sunwoda has been listed as a battery supplier for Nio.
