Forge Battery just announced that it started shipping its 21700 cylindrical Li-Ion battery cells with an impressive 300 Wh/kg energy density. The new battery is now being distributed to potential partners and current ones too.

Forge Battery achieves 300 Wh kg energy density, 10-minute charging

The 21700 battery standard offers significantly higher energy at the same volume compared to the widely used 18650 battery standard. Forge Battery achieves this by using a so-called Atomic Armor — an ultra-thin nanocoating that enables the increased density.

The new cell is called Gen 1.1 Supercell and uses a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathode and a silicone oxide graphite composite anode. The mix enables a full charge in 10 minutes without sacrificing the battery's lifespan. Moreover, the Gen 1.1 Supercell complies with the highest UN 38.3 and UL 1642 transportation standards.

Forge Battery claims that the presented tech outperforms every single one of the battery packs currently on the market.

The company has already signed contracts with various partners, but doesn't disclose which EV manufacturers will benefit from the Gen 1.1 Supercell. It also has off-take agreements for several gigawatt-hours per year with the said partners and has already received letters of intent totaling 24 GWh/year.

The Gen 1.1 Supercell is designed to be implemented in EVs, electric trucks, motorcycles and for aerospace and Department of Defense applications. Commercial production is planned to kick off in 2026 in its North Carolina factory in the US, with 90% of materials sourced within the country.
