Hundreds of thousands of Hyundai and Kia and Genesis electric vehicles are being recalled due to a potential issue leading to a loss of driving power and increasing the risk of a crash. This is the second major recall this year for the South Korean automakers, and it affects several popular models, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, GV70, G80, and the Kia EV6.

The issue stems from the integrated charging control units in these vehicles. These may become damaged and fail to charge the 12V battery, which could lead to a complete loss of drive power. This malfunction poses a significant safety risk to drivers, as the vehicle could suddenly lose power while in motion.

In the US, Hyundai is recalling 145,235 EVs, including the 2022 through 2024 Ioniq 5, the 2023 through 2025 Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60 and GV70, and the 2023 and 2024 G80. In Canada, Hyundai is recalling 34,529 vehicles that were produced between March and November of this year. Kia is recalling close to 63,000 Kia EV6 vehicles from 2022 through 2024 in the US. Details on the Canada recall are yet to be released.

This recall comes just months after a similar recall in March, where Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis recalled 147,110 electric vehicles for the same issue. The automakers have assured that all owners of affected vehicles will be notified by letter mail on the next steps to take. Owners will need to bring their vehicles to a dealership to have the charging unit and fuse inspected and replaced if necessary. A software update for the charging units will also be performed.

It is important to note that no crashes, injuries, fatalities, or fires due to this problem have been reported in the US or Canada.
