Lucid posts yet another sales record in Q2, adds hands-free driving with an update

Lucid

Lucid Motors, the California-based maker of luxury electric cars, just announced its sixth straight quarter of record-breaking vehicle deliveries. It seems that even in the world of high-end electric vehicles, a good deal goes a long way.

Lucid's price cuts and high-tech upgrades drive record sales

For the second quarter of 2025, Lucid delivered 3,309 of its premium EVs. While that number might seem small compared to industry giants, it represents a 38% increase over the same period last year and a 6% bump from the previous quarter. The company also ramped up production, building 3,863 cars, an 83% jump year-over-year. The numbers for the first half of the year are just as strong, with deliveries up 47% compared to the first six months of 2024.

A big part of the explanation is that in May, Lucid rolled out a leasing offer for its Air sedan that was hard to ignore. The company offered stackable discounts that could knock as much as $22,500 off the price. On a model like the Air Touring, which has a sticker price around $90,000, that's a massive incentive. It turns out that making your very expensive electric cars less expensive is a good way to sell more of them. Who knew?

Another major factor is the arrival of the new Gravity SUV. According to Lucid, more than 75% of orders for the new SUV are from customers who don't already own a Lucid Air. This suggests the company is successfully reaching a new audience. Lucid has also noted that it's winning over a significant number of former Tesla owners, who now make up a large portion of its customer base.

Beyond attractive pricing, Lucid continues to impress with its technology. The Gravity SUV has some of the best numbers in the business. It can accept a charge of up to 400 kW from a DC fast charger, making it the fastest-charging EV currently available in the United States. It also offers an estimated driving range of up to 450 miles.

Not to be outdone, its sibling, the Air sedan, recently set a world record by traveling 749 miles on a single charge, a testament to its efficiency. These are major selling points that distinguish Lucid from its rivals.

To keep the momentum going, Lucid is rolling out new software features to its electric cars. The company announced it is adding hands-free driving and automated lane changes to its vehicles. This over-the-air (OTA) software update, scheduled for July 30 for the Air and later this year for the Gravity, will allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel on compatible divided highways. The driver must still pay attention, but the car will handle steering, acceleration, and braking. To change lanes, the driver simply has to use the turn signal, and the car will perform the maneuver when it is safe.

This advanced capability doesn't come standard, however. The hands-free features are only available on cars with the optional DreamDrive Pro package. This is a $2,500 add-on for most Lucid Air models and a more substantial $6,750 upgrade for the Gravity SUV. For the extra money, customers get a vehicle loaded with 32 different sensors, including LiDAR, radar, a dozen cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. This hardware, combined with Lucid's own software, enables the new features and promises more upgrades in the future.
