MG

MG kicked off a teaser campaign today for its latest electric addition - the MG Comet. This tiny 4-seat EV will be launched tomorrow in India and the company sees it as a perfect answer to urban mobility problems. MG hopes the younger buyers will be swayed by the car's green credentials and considerably lower running costs than those of gas or diesel-powered equivalents.

At nearly 3 meters long this 2-door EV has a turning radius of just 4.2 meters. According to various sources, the built-in battery has a 17.3 kWh capacity and it powers a single electric motor with an output of 41.4 hp exactly. This tiny motor manages to churn out a rather respectable 110 Nm of torque which should make the Comet live up to its name.

Since India isn’t really the leader of fast charging infrastructure, the MG Comet doesn’t support it. It does accept the CCS plug though - in case a DC charger was available - but it will trickle charge the battery at 3.3 kW. Full charge takes about 7 hours but charging from 10% to 80% can be done in just 5 hours.

Once fully charged, the plucky little Comet can trundle on for 230 km according to the company which is pretty impressive and should be sufficient for everyday use. The top speed is limited to 100 km/h and the Comet comes with three driving modes - Eco, Normal, and Sport.

The interior is funky and it comes with two 10.25-inch screens - one for infotainment and one for all the info required by the driver. There are multi-function buttons on the steering wheel and with the funky colors, the interior is rather welcoming.

The car is rumored to start at 1 million Indian Rupee which is about $12,100 or €11,100. MG Comet will be available in three colors - black, silver, and white - and there will be two dual-color options available - white with black roof and green with black roof.

If you feel the MG Comet looks familiar then you’re not mistaken. This tiny EV is built on the GSEV platform from SAIC which supports various models from the SAIC-Wuling joint venture as well as the SAIC-Wuling-GM partnership. In fact, the Wuling Air is MG Comet’s 2-seat twin - it's shorter and it has steering wheel on the left.

who the heck has done that styling? Does that kind of stuff work even in India? There are a million ways to design a compact EV and remain compelling.. definitely not this one..

With that styling and that price tag, its dead on arrival. MG should have atleast compared this to other cars selling for the same price.
