Zeekr

Zeekr is gearing up for a significant update to its mainstay model, the Zeekr 001. Courtesy of the latest MIIT, we got an early scoop on what’s new under the familiar skin.

Following the standard procedure, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest catalog of approved models for public comment. Members of the public have the opportunity to provide feedback from January 16 to January 22. The Zeekr 001 is included in the latest filing since it comes with enough changes to need a new regulatory approval.

For starters, the refreshed Zeekr 001 is getting a serious boost in the performance department. The single-motor version of the new Zeekr 001 boasts a maximum power output of 310 kW (415 hp) - that’s 110 kW (147 hp) more than the current model. The dual-motor variant adds an extra motor to the front axle with a maximum power of 270 kW for a combined output of 580 kW - that’s 777 hp and 233 hp more than the current 001. The top speed is 149 mph, which again is a big upgrade when compared to 124 mph the current version achieves.

The new Zeekr 001 measures 195.9 inches in length - that’s 0.28 inches longer than the current model and it’s due to the refreshed bumpers. While the width remains unchanged at 78.7 inches, the height got a bump from 60.8 inches to 61.4 inches. The wheelbase remains the same at 3,005 mm.

The other big change with the new Zeekr 001 is its battery options. Buyers can choose between lithium ternary and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, sourced from CATL and Zeekr's subsidiary, Jidian. The standout here is the LFP-based "Golden Battery," which was unveiled on December 14. Manufactured at Jidian's plant in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, this battery is expected to offer improved performance and longevity.

The new version weighs between 5,258 lb and 5,677 lb, depending on the version you choose. That's an increase over the 4,850 lb - 5,181 lb range of the outgoing model.

The new Zeekr 001 offers optional LiDAR and air suspension, features not available in the current model.

The 001 is by far the company's best-selling vehicle, contributing 64% of its sales for 2023. In December alone, Zeekr close to 8,000 units of the 001, so it's understandably keen to maintain the momentum with a refresh.

Optional LiDAR and air suspension are nice, but I'd rather see Zeekr prioritize other safety features
