Polestar promises four new electric cars by 2028

Polestar started as a small branch of Volvo, but over the years, it turned into a major electric car manufacturer. Not entirely satisfied with its existing portfolio, the brand announced a plan to launch four new EVs over the next couple of years - the biggest product push the company has ever tried. By the end of 2028, Polestar hopes to have a much larger family of cars on the road.

The first big arrival is the Polestar 5. This "halo car" is a four-door grand tourer that looks like a concept car brought to life. It has a 112 kWh battery and uses two electric motors to produce 650 kW, which is about 872 horsepower. This much power lets the car go from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. This high-speed machine will start reaching customers in the summer of 2026.

Shortly after the Polestar 5 arrives, a new version of the Polestar 4 will hit the market in late 2026. The Polestar 4 is already the company's most popular model, but the new version is a wagon. Unlike the regular Polestar 4, which famously has no back window, the wagon variant will have a rear windshield. It will also offer way more cargo space. It will be built in South Korea and is expected to cost around $48,000, making it much cheaper than its main rival, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.

Polestar is also looking back at the car that started it all: the Polestar 2. This sedan has been the foundation of the brand, with over 190,000 units sold globally. The company plans to launch a completely new, second-generation Polestar 2 in early 2027. The current version will stop being made at the end of this year, and the new one is being developed at "record speed." The new sedan will likely be built in China, which could mean high taxes for buyers in the United States.

In 2028, the brand will move into one of the most popular categories with the Polestar 7. This model is a compact luxury SUV. In Europe, about one-third of all electric cars sold are small SUVs, so Polestar expects this car to be a big hit. The company plans to build the Polestar 7 in Europe to avoid some of the tariffs that come with shipping cars from Asia.

The company's CEO, Michael Lohscheller, is very optimistic about this "model offensive." He believes that by focusing on the heart of the market where people want to buy cars, Polestar can finally start making money. The company had a rough time losing about $1.558 billion in the first nine months of last year. In China, sales even dropped by over 80%. To fix this, the company is building new cars and is also growing its sales network by 30%. Polestar wants to move away from small boutique shops and open more traditional dealerships where people can easily see and test the cars.

But there are some troubles ahead, especially with taxes. Cars built in South Korea, like the Polestar 4, face a 15% import tax in the US and there is a chance these taxes could go up to 25% in the near future. Cars made in China face a massive 100% tax in the US, which is why the current Polestar 2 has struggled there. Polestar is trying to navigate these tricky waters by building cars in different parts of the world, like South Korea and Europe, to keep prices fair for customers.

Despite the money troubles and the high taxes, 2025 was actually Polestar's best year for sales so far. The company sold 60,119 cars globally - a 34% increase from the year before. They expect to keep growing by at least 10% in 2026. By offering everything from a super-fast sports sedan to a practical family wagon and a compact SUV, Polestar is trying to make sure there is an EV for everyone.

Again, another company who has no clue how to name vehicles. Their model names give me a headache when I think about it, along with their bland and overpriced cars...
