Tech giant Xiaomi confirms the new Sky Nomad brand

Xiaomi

Xiaomi already proved its mettle when it entered the automotive market back in 2024. You'd think the company would be happy with the success, but instead of slowing down, it continues to expand its vehicle operations aggressively. The firm successfully delivered 32,759 vehicles to domestic buyers in May 2026 alone, proving that consumer demand for its EVs is as high as ever. Now, the tech titan is taking its automotive ambitions to the next stage by introducing an entirely new sub-brand.

On July 8, 2026, the company officially confirmed that its new automotive division will carry the name Sky Nomad. In its domestic Chinese market, the manufacturer registered the business under the name Xiaomi Pengcheng. Xiaomi gained fame for producing sleek, high-performance electric cars, but the new branch will focus on an entirely different audience.

Sky Nomad will specialize in producing highly comfortable and exceptionally spacious vehicles for families and travelers. Not the one to waste precious time, the automaker has already launched a massive advertising campaign across major city screens in China and opened a dedicated page on the WeChat social platform.

The promotional materials and spy images reveal a serious shift in mechanical philosophy - until now, the company focused engineering efforts on pure electric cars, large battery packs, and charging stations. Sky Nomad will pivot toward extended-range electric vehicles, a category that we call EREVs. These vehicles use a combination of electricity and gasoline to eliminate driving anxiety during long road trips. The system allows drivers to enjoy the smooth, quiet performance that people expect from modern electric cars, without worrying about finding a charging station in remote areas.

The first vehicle to debut under the new label is a full-size SUV called the N90 - it measures 17.4 ft in total length and features a generous 10.2 ft wheelbase. To cater to different family sizes, the company plans to offer the vehicle with both five-seat and seven-seat interior layouts, following a growing trend among automakers who offer two-row versions of their largest utility vehicles to maximize luxury and legroom.

Under the bodywork, the N90 uses a highly efficient powertrain with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which functions purely as an on-board generator. It does not connect to the axles and sends zero direct turning power to the wheels. Instead, the turbocharged engine burns fuel strictly to generate electricity, which it then sends directly to the electric drive motors and the main battery pack.

A substantial battery pack with a capacity that exceeds 70 kWh delivers enough energy for the N90 to travel up to 311 miles before the 1.5-liter generator kicks in to keep the vehicle going. By combining a fully charged battery and a full tank of gasoline, the total mixed driving range of the vehicle exceeds 932 miles. This makes the vehicle an ideal choice for international buyers who travel long distances across regions with limited charging infrastructure.

The styling of the new SUV reflects its rugged yet premium positioning. We get prominent blocky headlights and a distinct, trapeze-shaped air intake on the front bumper. Additional air inlets sit on both sides of the front bumper to optimize aerodynamic airflow. The vehicle sports a high hood line that gives it a powerful stance, while automated, electrically powered door steps deploy to help passengers enter and exit the tall cabin safely. For advanced safety and automated driving, there's a high-tech LiDAR sensor directly on the roof to scan the road ahead.

The seemingly unstoppable expansion highlights how quickly Xiaomi has matured as an automaker. The firm completely shook up the traditional automotive industry in 2024 when it released the SU7 electric sedan, proving that a tech newcomer could quickly capture a major share of the market. Since then, the company has grown its portfolio to include the high-performance SU7 Ultra and the YU7 crossover, which also includes a sporty YU7 GT variant.

Auto industry analysts expect the brand to reveal exact pricing and additional features of the N90 closer to the official market debut. With a combination of smart technology, vast interior dimensions, and a powertrain that cures range anxiety, Xiaomi's new venture promises to change what global buyers expect from large hybrid vehicles and modern EVs.
