Xiaomi again delivers 30,000 EVs in August

Xiaomi Auto announced that its monthly vehicle deliveries stayed above 30,000 vehicles in August, extending the streak of five months in a row past that baseline. On paper, moving thirty thousand high-tech EVs every thirty days sounds like a win for a fledgling car division. But dig under the sheen, and the picture gets a bit murky.

Xiaomi decided not to provide an exact figure of deliveries, leaving us to read the tea leaves. We know July deliveries settled at 31,267 units - a 2.68% bump over the year before, but a 9.99% slide compared to June. In August last year, the company delivered 36,396 cars - and now we begin to understand why the execs are not celebrating just yet.

The scale of the self-built mountain Xiaomi must climb is impossible to ignore. Across the first seven months of the year, the brand put 216,322 cars into customer hands. Add the conservative 30,000-unit baseline for August, and it pushes the eight-month total to roughly 246,322 vehicles - that's less than 45% of CEO Lei Jun's audacious 550,000-car annual target.

Grab a pencil, scribble out the basic math, and the challenge borders on a miracle: Xiaomi must average approximately 75,900 deliveries in each and every month from September through December. That is roughly 2.4 times its July volume. Cranking up assembly lines by two and a half times overnight? That's never been done - it doesn't mean it's impossible, but it won't be easy.

This mathematical bottleneck explains why all eyes across the industry are fixated on the SkyNomad series. Formally unveiled late this summer, the SkyNomad lineup is a big change for Xiaomi. Rather than stubbornly pinning all its hopes on pure battery-electric drivetrains, the brand is diving headfirst into the lucrative extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market.

By packaging a compact generator under the hood to feed a large battery pack, Xiaomi is angling for suburban families and cross-country road-trippers who still struggle with range anxiety. The sales kick off this September with the flagship seven-seat N90 Max and the five-seat N70 Max, with more affordable standard and Pro variants waiting in the wings.

The flagship SkyNomad N90 Max is a proper highway cruiser. Stretching an immense 208.1 inches in length, measuring 78.7 inches across its flanks, and standing 71.9 inches tall on a 121.3 inches wheelbase, this is a fortress on wheels. Tipping the scales at 6,171 lb, it uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering 310 kW (416 horsepower) to launch from zero to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds.

Inside, Xiaomi has leaned into executive lounge theater: the front seats can rotate 180 degrees backward when parked, creating a face-to-face living space complete with zero-gravity massage chairs and an optional deployable table. It is an extravagant parlor trick - who hasn't dreamed of hosting a poker game while waiting in the school pickup line?

For drivers who find a full-size hauler a bit too unwieldy for tighter city streets, the smaller five-seat SkyNomad N70 Max is still a sizable package. At 195.3 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and 69.5 inches tall on a 116.1 inches wheelbase, it weighs between 5,408 lb and 5,754 lb. The N70 Max has an EV-only CLTC range of up to 314 miles before its 1.5-liter generator ever wakes up.

Xiaomi is staking its entire year-end volume push on range extenders at the exact moment the EREV market is cooling off. After years of relentless expansion across China, retail sales of EREVs actually dropped 15.35% year-on-year to 535,000 units across the first seven months of the year. Domestic buyers are splitting into two camps: those migrating straight to ultra-fast-charging 800-volt EVs, and those going for cheaper plug-in hybrids. Xiaomi is swimming against the macro tide, betting that its brand halo and software prowess can defy the market's downward pull.

Even if order books overflow with deposits, the real trial of strength will take place on the factory floor. It is one thing to stamp out the sleek, wind-cheating SU7 sedan, and another matter entirely to assemble multi-ton hybrid leviathans.

Integrating complex range-extended powertrains with internal combustion generators, expansive cooling circuits, heavy swiveling seat assemblies, and high-power computing hardware at a pace of seventy thousand vehicles a month will push Xiaomi's manufacturing logistics to the absolute edge. A single supplier delay or quality hiccup could easily stall the ramp-up.

Lei Jun has described the automotive venture as his last major entrepreneurial crusade. The opening chapter with the SU7 was a success of branding, styling, and dynamics, proving that a consumer tech powerhouse could design a sports sedan capable of winning over seasoned petrolheads. But the honeymoon is over - transforming a performance darling into a real automotive titan needs high-margin, family-focused volume haulers that can shift in huge numbers month after month.

As the final four months of the year unfold, the pressure on Xiaomi Auto will be immense. The SkyNomad series is the critical linchpin in a daring 550,000-vehicle high-wire act. If the N70 and N90 Max strike a chord with Chinese buyers and production lines operate without missing a beat, Xiaomi might pull off one of the wildest year-end sales rallies in modern automotive history. If they stumble, it will be a painful reminder that even the most ambitious tech giants must eventually bow to the realities of the car business.
