Renault Announcement

The Renault Twingo E-Tech electric (that's its full name, by the way) is coming to Europe in early 2026 and it will start at under $23,000. This should make it quite competitive in the exceedingly overpriced European car market, but at that price, this being an EV, there are plenty of compromises as you may expect.

Basically, to reach such a price, a European manufacturer has to cut a lot of things in a lot of places, and we'll have to wait and see if people think Renault applied the correct cuts. The Twingo has a single 60kW (82 hp) motor, which enables it to go from zero to 62 mph in 12.1 seconds. The top speed is 81 mph.

It has a 27.5kWh LFP battery that apparently enables a 163 miles WLTP range, and Renault thinks its potential customer base only moves 22 miles per day on average, so that's plenty. The battery charges at 6.6kW AC as standard, going from 10% to 100% in 4 hours and 15 minutes.

If you want 11kW AC and 50kW DC charging support, you will need to purchase the Advanced Charge pack, which Renault promises will be "offered at an attractive price", but isn't saying what that is yet. 11kW AC charging takes 2 hours and 35 minutes to go from 10% to 100%, while on a 50kW or higher DC charger the battery will go from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes, which the European car industry seems to have decided is adequate for some reason.

The Twingo supports vehicle-to-load with the Advanced Charge pack, delivering up to 3,700W of power for 220V appliances. There's also support for vehicle-to-grid, in case you think the 27.5kWh battery is too large to only power the car.

The Twingo supports one-pedal driving, and you can use paddles on the steering wheel to change regen intensity. The software inside is based on Android Automotive and thus supports Google Maps, which optimizes routes for charging stops, which, if you ever do leave the city, is going to prove to be an essential feature considering the battery size.

You also get access to the Play Store for more than 100 apps. You have a 7" driver screen and a 10" central screen, as well as 16" wheels. The car is 149.2 inches long, 67.7 inches wide, 58.7 inches tall, and has a wheelbase of 98.1 inches. It weighs 2,646 lb. It has a turning circle of 32.38 ft. Its boot capacity is 12.7 ft³.

"TBH, the only thing I really do not like about this car is the weight." - For an electric car, it's a light car! Check out the weights of other electric cars for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

No, rather a replacement for the electric Twingo that is available in some markets, with the big difference that the upcoming model is directly developed as an electric car.

"Too bad the battery capacity went from 32.3 kWh for the Škoda Citigo iv to 27.5 kWh for Twingo." - These two cars have almost exactly the same range!
