Shenlan S7 SUV spied ahead of April unveiling, wants to compete with Tesla's Model Y

Shenlan

Shenlan is a recently established Chinese EV brand that's a joint venture between car maker Changan, battery giant CATL, and Huawei. It's positioned in the Chinese market above the Changan brand, but below the Avatr brand. Its first car was the SL03, which obviously took a lot of inspiration from the Tesla Model 3.

Shenlan's second model is the S7 SUV, which will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April. It's now been captured in a bunch of spy shots, seen almost 'in the nude' on Chinese streets.

While this one isn't a direct copy of a Tesla model, its dimensions are almost identical to those of the Model Y. Coincidence? Maybe. But probably not.

The Shenlan S7 is 4,750 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,625 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase. For comparison, the Model Y is 4,751 mm long, 1,921 mm wide, 1,624 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. So it's very clear what the S7 is meant to compete with.

That said, the shape is less similar to the Model Y than the SL03's was to the Model 3. The S7 will come in EV and EREV options, the former to be available with two power options: 218 hp and 258 hp. The EREV will have a 238 hp electric motor and a 1.5l 95 hp gasoline engine, that works as a generator for the battery.

The Shenlan S7 is expected to start at around CNY 160,000, which right now translates into approximately $23,596 or €21,971.
