Tesla Cybertruck's stealthy new aero wheels spotted - adding style or saving miles?

As we continue to ride the wave of anticipation building up to the launch of Tesla's Cybertruck, each new sighting of the vehicle turns into a miniature event within the EV community. The latest buzz? Aero wheels. But these aren't just any aero wheels - they're sleeker, simpler, and finished in a slick metallic black that speaks to both style and functionality.

Recently, a camouflaged Cybertruck was spotted rolling around Palo Alto, California, and quick-eyed enthusiasts couldn't help but notice its wheels. Clad in what could be called a piece of 'wheel fashion,' the Cybertruck flaunted its shiny, star-shaped black aero wheel covers. These new additions might look just like a decorative addition, but they are far more than that.

So-called aero wheels serve a purpose beyond just looking good. They're designed to reduce wind turbulence - and as a result, lower the air resistance. Essentially they help the vehicle cut through the air with less effort, which in turn can boost energy efficiency, and that translates to increased range. Some of you might remember a test on the Tesla Model 3 that found its aero wheels increased its range by up to 10 miles. Although it may sound like not much initially but trust us - running out of juice 5 miles away from a DC charger should never be on your wishlist.

Of course, the new wheels aren't without their critics. Some people already noticed that the covers appeared misaligned and off-center, possibly suggesting this design is still in the prototype phase or simply they were put on to cover up a new wheel design. The wheels - or the covers, if that's what they are - might be rough around the edges, but they're an indication of Tesla's commitment to refinement and improvement.

These new aero wheel covers represent quite a departure from the rugged, robust ones seen on the Cybertruck when Elon Musk first unveiled the vehicle in 2019. Ultimately, the choice to offer aero wheels could be part of a broader strategy for Tesla to maximize the Cybertruck's efficiency. After all, with the prospect of a 350 miles of range on the horizon, it wouldn't be surprising to see the company try to eke out every inch out of the drivetrain, and aero wheels can help a lot.

The wheels aren't the only way Tesla is trying to optimize the Cybertruck. The company is reportedly employing an array of tactics to ensure the truck is as lightweight and cost-efficient as possible. From giga-casting to a structural battery pack, the Cybertruck may well end up tipping the scales less than rival models, even with its hefty, stainless steel exoskeleton.
