Tesla’s Cybertruck closer to reality: enhanced battery cells and pre-production progress unveiled

Tesla

Tesla is always up to something. After teasing the world with the formidable, futuristic, and occasionally controversial Cybertruck for years, we finally have some updates about this much-anticipated pickup. Tesla's Q2 earnings call was chock-full of Cybertruck nuggets that paint a picture of a vehicle that's going to be quite unique.

With the Austin-based Gigafactory coming to life, the company focuses on creating release candidate Cybertruck units. These are the final versions of the truck that will be put through a battery of tests worldwide, culminating in their certification and validation. If you thought you might see Cybertrucks out on the roads soon, pump the brakes. Tesla clarified that the factory is in the pre-production phase, and the initial production will hit the pedal later this year. The sneak peek of a finished Cybertruck on Tesla's Twitter account was just that - a teaser, not the start of mass production.

However, the real showstopper is the pickup itself. Tesla says the Cybertruck will be the first sub-19 feet truck with four doors and a bed longer than six feet. Specific dimensions are still under wraps, but it's clear this beast is ready to go toe-to-toe with competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, both of which fall short in bed length.

To power this all-electric mammoth, Tesla is betting big on their 4680 cells. The company managed to push the envelope with an energy density 10% higher than the current production. Whether this increased energy density will translate into a longer range or a smaller battery pack with a similar range is yet to be revealed. But the development is significant and underscores Tesla's continuous innovation.

And let's not forget about the production of these energy-dense cells. Production has ramped up by a whopping 80% at the Texas plant in Q2 2023. This is no small feat and testament to Tesla's ability to scale up and improve its processes. Plus, there's been a 25% reduction in the cost of these battery cells, indicating lower raw material costs.

With all these advances, the Cybertruck is Tesla's vision for a new-age pickup truck. This vehicle combines a traditional truck's functionality with an electric vehicle's tech-forward ethos. And, of course, as controversial as ever - it still is hard to believe at times that Tesla actually is about to deliver this out-of-this-world truck to the masses. Shaking up the truck market is one thing, but we're still waiting to see how consumers will respond when the rubber finally meets the road.
