A leak from Volvo's internal board has ignited anticipation by revealing details about its upcoming electric sedan, possibly named the ES90. With a 111 kWh battery and a host of impressive specs, the V551 (as it's known internally) will set many hearts racing.

Volvo's prototype production, unveiled in a photo alongside a conspicuously labeled "CONFIDENTIAL TOP SECRET" sign, hints at the company's enthusiasm for the project. Reported by Swedish outlet TeknikensVärld, the leaked specs include a substantial 111 kWh battery (107 kWh usable), delivering 373 miles of range. The V551, with a 122 inches wheelbase and 5,732 lb curb weight, will offer two drive configurations: dual-motor all-wheel drive and single-motor rear-wheel drive. Prototype production is slated to begin in May 2024, with retail availability expected by mid-2025.

This places the ES90 in direct competition with mid-size luxury electric sedans like the Mercedes EQE, BMW i5, Tesla Model S, and Lucid Air - only a few years late to the party.

The ES90 is Volvo's first car developed entirely by the company's China-based R&D team. While Volvo produces many of its electric models in China, the automaker has maintained a significant engineering and design presence in its home country, Sweden.

Volvo's electric sedan ES90 emerges with a bang, but there's a catch

Looking ahead to mid-2025, the projected 372 miles of range may no longer stand out in a market where technological advancements occur swiftly. As the automotive industry progresses, crucial questions arise: Will Volvo introduce an 800V architecture? Can it incorporate cutting-edge autonomy features? Will the ES90 disrupt the luxury EV sedan segment with competitive pricing?

I bet the range of this electric sedan will decrease significantly in real-world driving conditions

In terms of weight and efficiency, it is incredibly subpar ... and it is subpar today, imagine they will release this ancient brick on wheels in 2025

That doesn't seem "horrid" to me. On the other hand, it's been teased by Toyota that by 2028, they will be offering new technology solid state batteries, with much greater range and much faster recharge times than current li...
