The world premiere of VW’s electric flagship sedan ID.7 is approaching fast. Volkswagen will fully unveil the car on April 17 and the company is putting the final touches and wrapping up the testing. The ID.7 will go on sale first in China and then it will follow in Europe and the US.

The first thing that emerged from various test drives already, is the ID.7’s driving range. The car comes with a newly developed powertrain that the company claims to be far more efficient than the current units available for all vehicles sharing the MEB platform. The results are quite something - WLTP range of up to 700km with a new, 86kWh battery and 611km with the well-known 77kWh unit.

The company put a lot of effort into developing new running gear and the ID.7 apparently drives much smoother and offers precise steering. There is an optional chassis control system that can further enhance comfort or improve the handling for a bit of a sportier ride.

The interior is not only much spacier, but the front gets a much cleaner layout. The center is taken over by a 15-inch screen while the instrument cluster has shrunk. Only a small display sits behind the steering wheel, bending in nicely with the dashboard. Most of the information is projected in full color and at high definition onto the windshield thanks to the new HUD.

The ID.7 has completely redesigned seats with adaptive cooling, heating, and massage functions. They can be adjusted in as many as 14 ways and the Auto mode will adjust the temperature and decide on cooling or heating on its own, making sure the driver and front passenger get the best treatment.

With the enhanced comfort, more spacious cabin, and the new vastly improved range, the ID.7 starts looking like a decent long-distance electric car. Volkswagen goes as far as calling it the long-distance limousine but that’s a bit of a stretch. We have less than two weeks left until the world premiere and we can’t wait to find out more details.

The VW ID.7 is the first electric car from Volkswagen to be launched in China, Europe, and the US almost simultaneously. As such, it is a very important model, the company wants its portfolio to contain at least 80% of electric cars by 2030. In China, new emissions regulations mean that VW can pretty much only sell electric cars. With the majority of its ICE-powered Chinese models no longer qualifying for sales permits, the ID.7 comes at a crucial time for the company.
