Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, is gearing up to launch its debut electric vehicle, the SU7, and the founder and CEO, Lei Jun, is fanning the flames with some sneaky teaser images. However, the suspense surrounding the price and performance of the SU7 leaves enthusiasts and skeptics alike questioning Xiaomi's foray into the competitive automotive arena.

Xiaomi's EV arm, Xiaomi EV, will possibly unveil the SU7 at a tech launch on December 28. Lei Jun, in a series of social media posts, provided a sneak peek into what he calls a "Speed Ultra" – the SU7's defining feature, positioning it as a high-performance tech ecosystem sedan.

The SU7, a mid-to-large-sized sedan, aims to redefine the driving experience with advanced technology and a supportive ecosystem. Lei Jun, in his characteristic style, hinted that the SU7 is not designed to imitate competitors but is a result of extensive user research, promising driving performance that rivals the best in its class, including the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Tesla Model S.

One notable feature is its substantial dimensions, measuring 196.7 inches in length, 77.3 inches in width, and a height ranging from 56.7 inches to 57.3 inches, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The power source of the SU7 comes in two battery capacities, 73.6 kWh and 101 kWh, offering an impressive CLTC range of up to 497 miles. This is a critical metric for potential buyers, as the EV range often influences purchase decisions.

One contentious aspect is the yet-to-be-finalized price, with Lei Jun admitting that it might seem "a bit expensive." Speculation ranges from RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000 ($28,000 to $42,000), with some drawing parallels to Xiaomi's smartphone pricing strategy, hinting at a possible starting price below RMB 200,000.

Despite concerns about Xiaomi's ability to compete in the crowded RMB 200,000 auto market, Lei Jun is resolute. He addressed rumors about delays, assuring enthusiasts that the SU7 is in trial production and requires a few more months before hitting the market officially. The CEO emphasized that the seemingly high price is justified by the unparalleled experience it promises, indirectly challenging competitors in the process.

Lei Jun's commitment to bridging the gap between automobiles and consumer electronics, leveraging Xiaomi's consumer electronics expertise, adds a unique dimension to the SU7.
