Ford just announced a serious update for its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. The 2024 model year brings improved performance, range charging speed, and even an off-road-ready trim.
The 2024 Mach-E RWD version can squeeze out 250 miles from the standard battery and 320 miles with the extended one, each figure representing an improvement of 20 miles over the outgoing model. The AWD GT trim does 280 miles per charge - a boost of 10 miles. The extra range comes courtesy of a refined rear motor and other under-the-hood efficiency tweaks Ford still needs to fully detail.
The 10% to 80% charging time for the standard battery is cut by nearly 6 minutes and now takes just over 32 minutes. The extended pack needs 36 minutes to do the same thing, an improvement of 9 minutes. Unfortunately, Ford has yet to disclose the DC power rates required to achieve those.
There's no change to the power output of the RWD version, but the AWD Mustang Mach-E GT gets an optional $995 "Performance Upgrade," slicing half a second off its time to 60 mph. This puts the upgraded GT at an impressive 3.3 seconds, outpacing both the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Porsche Macan 4 Electric in Ford's words.
And then we have the all-new Rally trim, which is the new top trim. 1" higher than the GT and with the Performance upgrade coming as standard Ford says it's made for those looking to have fun on dirt roads. Its expected range is 265 miles, the extra height and performance costing it a bit compared to the GT.
2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E RallyThe base Select trim is available in three different configuration RWD standard battery for $39,995, AWD standard battery at $43,495 and AWD extended battery, costing $46,995. Then comes Premium, which can be had in all four possible combinations, ranging from $43,995 to $49,995. GT is $53,995 plus an extra $995 for the performance upgrade, while Rally is $59,995. Those last two come with the bigger battery and AWD powertrain.
Unfortunately, the new Mach-E does not qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit due to the origin of its battery and some components. This puts it at a bit of a disadvantage compared to the Tesla Model Y Performance, which sells for around $41,000, but Ford is very keen to point out that its car is superior and well worth the difference.
They still need to add a heat pump for better heating efficiency vs resistive. Winter range is going to still get crushed.
