Bentley Torcal reinvents grand luxury

Leather has enjoyed a century-long monopoly over luxury car interiors, but I always struggled to understand our obsession with it. In the heat of mid-July, it turns into a scorching skillet, and by January, it feels like you're sitting on a block of ice. Then, after a decade of use it cracks like an old sofa. And despite all that, automakers treat it as the non-negotiable part of high-end luxury.

But leave it to Crewe - the home of hand-stitched hides and burr walnut - to finally stage an interior rebellion. The upcoming Torcal crossover, Bentley's first-ever all-electric production car, is ditching the standard cow-shed aesthetic for pure Somerset merino wool and thousand-layer timber veneers.

This is not the synthetic, petroleum-derived vinyl that Silicon Valley loves to rebrand as "vegan leather." Bentley teamed up with Fox Brothers - a historic Somerset cloth mill that has been weaving wool since the eighteenth century - to create the first automotive fabric spun from 100% certified merino wool.

Instead of the flimsy thirty-percent wool blends you find diluted with recycled polyester in other luxury cabins, this stuff is soft, naturally breathable, and trimmed with ribbed quilting. It sits alongside an ombré veneer composed of 1,000 compressed strata of walnut off-cuts and recycled paper, sliced into slivers measuring less than 1 mm thick to produce a natural fade from pitch black to rich wood tones. Factor in bespoke Cumbria Crystal dials and Sunburst aluminum dashes, and the cabin feels like a tailored Savile Row lounge on wheels.

Naturally, Bentley's marketing department has opted to call this machine an "Urban EV," which represents some truly British humor. At 197 inches in length, the Torcal is about as "urban" as a country estate. Still, the designers have pulled off a visual sleight of hand.

Drawing direct inspiration from classic broad-shouldered Continental R and Brooklands, the Torcal wears an upright front fascia, frameless glass, and gutterless door skins that avoid the bloated crossover silhouette. Rolling on 22-inch wheels, it projects road presence without towering over traffic like a runaway delivery van.

Under all that bespoke wool and hand-cut crystal, the mechanical hardware is properly serious. The Torcal shares the Volkswagen Group's 800V Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture with the electric Porsche Cayenne. That means two electric motors delivering something in the neighborhood of 900 horsepower, fed by a massive 112 kWh battery pack. Thanks to an 800V electrical spine capable of peak charging speeds up to 400 kW, you can blast 100 miles of range into the battery in under seven minutes at a high-speed DC plug.

Straight-line performance will be appropriately savage. Bentley's research and development chief, Matthias Rabe, promises that the Torcal will deliver the most blistering acceleration in the marque's history. That means it will comfortably eclipse the 3.2-second sprint to 62 mph posted by the brand's hybrid Continental GT.

In a true Bentley spirit, rather than pumping fake sci-fi synthesizer hums through the cabin speakers, the Brits commissioned real studio musicians to record acoustic percussion and instruments, layering them to recreate the emotional cadence of a classic twin-turbo V8 under hard throttle. Paired with active dual-valve air suspension that decouples pitch and roll, it should corner flat while floating effortlessly over broken asphalt.

Torcal is expected to carry an opening price tag around $233,000, towering comfortably above the tech-heavy BMW iX, which starts at a comparatively modest $96,000. It also easily undercuts the aristocratic Rolls-Royce Spectre, an immense two-door $453,000 electric barge. Its fiercest dynamic rivalry will come from the $122,900 Lotus Eletre, and the upcoming Range Rover Electric, which will retail near $206,000.

The Torcal arrives at a crossroads moment for the Crewe manufacturer. Under the leadership of CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, Bentley pushed back its original plan to become exclusively electric by 2030, acknowledging that ultra-luxury buyers still want the sound of combustion. But rather than chasing aerodynamic records with jellybean shapes that ruin cabin space, Bentley engineers opted for a real-world driving range of 350 to 370 miles.

Bentley refused to build another sterile, screen-smothered rolling appliance, and in the process it might have cracked the real formula for modern electric luxury. The Torcal is a very expensive promise that instant torque and whisper-quiet electric motors do not have to come at the expense of old-school craftsmanship, tactile charm, and unmistakable mechanical personality.
