BMW just announced its newly updated BMW i4 models, which are supposed to go into production as early as this summer. Through various optimizations, the i4s are getting more power and a longer battery warranty.
Let's start with the new range-topper. The i4 M60 xDrive replaces the M50 - it still has two electric motors but has an increased combined output of 593 hp, which is 50 hp more than before. In fact, the M60 is now more powerful than the gasoline-powered BMW M4 CS.
The M60 is now capable of running from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds, while the range according to WLTP is 289 miles.
The entry-level BMW i4s are also getting an update. The new single-motor eDrive35 and eDrive40 are now updated with silicon carbide semiconductor components that improve the cruising range. Interestingly, the i4 eDrive35 and the i4 eDrive40 can go up to 266 miles and 317 miles away from the plug, respectively. The cited figures are lower than the current eDrive35 and eDrive40 configurations that offer 300 miles and 367 miles, respectively. That contradicts BMW's cited 4.5% range improvements, but we don't know the reason for the discrepancy.
BMW has also announced that it's extending the warranty of its high-voltage batteries in the US. Vehicles under 8 years old, with less than 100,000 miles on them, and the battery capacity has fallen below 70%, are eligible for a free repair.
The new i4s are scheduled to go into production in July, with deliveries kicking off shortly after.
