GAC Aion unveils the electric Hyper HT SUV with gullwing doors missing

GAC Aion, known for its Hyper SSR supercar and Hyper GT sports sedan, is adding another EV to its electric lineup. Enter the Hyper HT, a coupe crossover. When the car was first teased, the designed sketches featured Tesla Model X-inspired gullwing doors but the production vehicle seems to have skipped on that idea. While pre-orders are expected to open soon after its November debut, here’s what we know so far about this new vehicle.

The designers at GAC Aion may have a little soft spot for Tesla with those rear gullwing doors reminiscent of the Tesla Model X. Unfortunately that dramatic solution will remain in the realm of ideas, since the production vehicle comes with standard, boring rear doors. But let's not pigeonhole the Hyper HT; it has its own flair. A closer look reveals a car that might make you go, "I've seen that before." But delve deeper, and the originality comes to the fore.

The Hyper HT boasts a length of 194.3 inches, a width of 75.6 inches, a height of 66.9 inches, and stands on a 115.6 inches wheelbase. The front fascia sports a headlight design somewhat reminiscent of the Hyper GT sedan, albeit a bit more, shall we say, plump. And don't go looking for a front grille because you won’t find one. Instead, you'll be greeted with two petite vertical air curtains and a slender central intake. All these give the SUV a somewhat generic face, unlike the distinct features of its sibling, the Hyper SSR electric sports car.

However, the LED taillights connect seamlessly through a light bar, and there are some other notable features. We’re talking frameless doors, a choice of 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, and cameras perched on the front fenders.

Car enthusiasts often say, "It's what's inside that counts," and the Hyper HT seems to take that quite seriously. According to MIIT documents, beneath the swanky body lies a powertrain producing 335 hp (250 kW) and 317 lb-ft of torque. These numbers mean the SUV can zoom from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

As for the battery, the exact specs remain a mystery. But sources suggest a ternary lithium pack that can offer up to 373 miles on a full charge. Additionally, there's a tease of three different LiDAR options, potentially hinting at an advanced driver assistance system.

While no official images of the Hyper HT's interior have surfaced, spy shots indicate a flat-bottom and flat-top steering wheel, a generously sized Tesla-style infotainment screen, and a compact instrument cluster for the driver and wireless smartphone charging pads conveniently located on the center console.

If you're wondering about the dent this car might leave in your pocket, it's expected to start at around RMB 240,000 ($32,800). Given the specifications, it seems like quite the deal - of course as long as you are in China.

On a side note, GAC Aion was established only in September 2022. More interestingly, the company has joined forces with the China National Space Administration to delve into battery development, aerodynamic design, and even satellite remote sensing technology.
