Mercedes

Among the most anticipated entries into the automotive landscape that is witnessing a transformative EV era, is the electric 2025 Mercedes G-Class. The yet-to-be-named EQG is a vehicle that promises to redefine luxury EVs while maintaining the iconic status of its G-Class lineage. That is a lot of lineage to live up to and Mercedes is taking its sweet time to - hopefully - ensure the end product exceeds the expectations.

The company took to X (the good old Twitter) to remind us that the all-electric G-Wagon is coming soon, and in the process revealed more images. The vehicle in question, although wrapped in camouflage, left nothing to the imagination.

The EQG (is that what Mercedes will call it?) stands as Mercedes' ambitious endeavor to electrify one of its most iconic models - the G-Class. Known for its luxurious appeal and off-road prowess, the G-Class has been a symbol of automotive excellence. The EQG is set to continue this legacy, but with a significant twist: it’s going electric.

At first glance, the EQG retains the classic G-Class silhouette, a strategic move by Mercedes to preserve the vehicle's iconic design. However, closer inspection reveals nuanced changes. The vehicle sports a square ‘spare tire carrier,’ which in reality, serves as a lockable box, echoing the design cues of the EQG concept. Additionally, the EQG will feature aerodynamic design elements such as specialized wheels and slight modifications to the rear fender flares.

The EQG's interior is also expected to undergo a significant revamp. It is anticipated to include a new steering wheel, a redesigned center console, and updated switchgear. Unique to the EQG will be the inclusion of a G-Turn button, enabling the vehicle to perform impressive 'tank turns.'

The 2025 EQG is slated to feature a quad-motor powertrain, promising substantial pulling power and controllability. This system is expected to offer both high and low-range gearing, simulating three locking differentials and allowing power output to be directed to individual wheels as needed. In terms of battery technology, Mercedes is expected to introduce an optional extended-range battery with silicon anode chemistry, potentially increasing energy density by 20-40%. This advancement would result in a significant boost in the vehicle's range.

While Mercedes has not yet revealed the official pricing for the EQG, we can comfortably expect it to be in the upper echelon of the EV market. The current G-Class starts at a substantial price point, and with the added technology and features of the EQG, a higher price tag would not be surprising.

A key aspect of the EQG is its potential to address the fuel inefficiency of its predecessors. The traditional G-Class, while a symbol of luxury, has been infamous for its abysmal fuel economy. The EQG represents a significant shift towards environmental consciousness, offering a greener alternative without compromising on performance and status.

The EQG is part of a larger strategy by Mercedes to embrace electric mobility. The automaker has been integrating the 'EQ' branding to signify its electric vehicle lineup, and the EQG is a flagship representation of this commitment. However, Mercedes is also reportedly considering moving away from the 'EQ' branding, potentially indicating a deeper integration of electric technology across all its models. So it is highly possible that the new G-wagon won’t be called EQG after all - the suspense is killing us.

The 2025 all-electric Mercedes G-Class is so much more than just a new model; it's a statement by Mercedes about the future of luxury electric vehicles. With its blend of iconic design, advanced technology, and a nod towards environmental responsibility, the EQG will be unquestionably a significant player in the luxury EV market. Expect the rich and famous to line up and snap the first units and flaunt them on the boulevards, where the majority of G-Class vehicles live out their lives.
