Tesla sales slump continues in May, Norway the only one to surge

Tesla

Tesla's sales are dropping like crazy across the globe from the beginning of this year, with the trend in China stretching for eight months even. The latest data shows Chinese customers now prefer not just BYD over Tesla, but Xiaomi as well.

Tesla sales are down in China as well, but surge in Norway

The company recorded only 61,662 sales in May in China, including domestic and export sales. That's about a 15% decrease compared to the same period last year, despite having a refreshed Model Y readily available for the entire month. Sales have consistently gone down since October 2024.

And if we take the whole five-month period in 2024 and compare it to the January-May time frame in 2025, Tesla's shipments are down almost 18%. That's 292,875 vehicles shipped, down from 355,616 in 2024.

Looking at the booming European EV market, Tesla is one of the few losing ground and it's doing so fast. The data shows extremely bad performance from the beginning of 2025, with sales decreasing in key markets like Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Denmark and others.

However, May sales in Norway are up by a staggering 213% year-over-year. But that's more of a statistical anomaly and here's why.

Tesla sales are down in China as well, but surge in Norway

Tesla sales in Norway in May 2024 were abnormally low, so the company's growth is a bit out of context. For one, compared to May 2023 the sales are still lower. An increase in total sales, given that fewer than 1,000 Norwegians bought a Tesla in May last year isn't the great news the company will have you believe.

The company initially tried to explain its disastrous Q1 performance with the Model Y refresh, but at this point the production lines are working at full capacity and it's clear that the issue is demand rather than production. Tesla already offering discounts on Model Y along with zero-interest financing further points in that direction.

The lack of real inovations is cruel. Dumping the cheap model is a major error. Tesla will continue to fall glpbally and wil disappear when Chinese constructors will put solid state batteries in their EVs starting next year. RIP Tesla by 2030!
