BMW is almost ready to launch its next-generation electric vehicle, the 2026 iX3. This new model is built on the company's innovative "Neue Klasse" platform - a big step for the brand's electric ambitions, moving beyond adapting existing gasoline-powered cars and introducing a vehicle designed from the ground up as an EV. Leaked details provide a comprehensive picture of what to expect, from performance and technology to the sheer number of customization options.

Production for the European market will begin later this month at BMW's new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, with the iX3 50 xDrive being the first model off the line. North American and Asian markets will see their versions enter production in March 2026, followed by an expansion to the San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico in the second half of that year.

The initial model range will include the iX3 40, 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, and a high-performance M60 xDrive. Two additional models, including the top-tier M60, will join the lineup in July 2026. Buyers will have a palette of colors to choose from, including Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Space Silver, Polarized Grey, Brooklyn Grey, Ocean Wave Blue, Smokey Green, and Fire/Vegas Red.

One of the most talked-about features is the Panoramic iDrive interface, a wide, dash-spanning screen first showcased in the Vision Neue Klasse concept. This will be standard equipment - a bold move from BMW. Complementing this is an Augmented View system and an optional 3D Head-Up Display, which projects critical information like speed and navigation directly into the driver's line of sight.

The iX3 50 xDrive, for which we have the most detailed specifications, measures 188.2 inches in length, 74.6 inches in width, and 64.4 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 114 inches. This places it firmly in the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment.

The 2026 iX3 offers a generous 18.4 ft³ of luggage space, expandable to 61.8 ft³ with the rear seats folded down. A welcome surprise is the addition of a 58-l waterproof and dustproof front trunk, or "frunk," adding a dose of practicality often missing in EVs from legacy automakers. The curb weight, without a driver, is a substantial 5,038 lb.

Underpinning the 50 xDrive is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The rear motor produces 240 kW (322 hp) and 321 lb-ft of torque, while the front motor contributes 123 kW (165 hp) and 188 lb-ft. This combination enables a 0-62 mph sprint in a brisk 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph.

Powering all this performance is a large 113.4 kWh battery pack (108.4 kWh usable), operating on an advanced 800V architecture. This high-voltage system allows for incredibly fast charging, with a maximum power of 400 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in just 21 minutes.

BMW claims the iX3 will have an EPA-rated range of 400 miles with the European WLTP standard going as far as 497 miles. This, of course, will depend on the model. The new SUV will also support bidirectional charging, allowing it to power a home (Vehicle-to-Home) or feed energy back to the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid).

BMW is also loading the iX3 with a host of standard and optional features. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, a power tailgate, flush door handles with comfort access, and the BMW Digital Key Plus.

Inside, the Panoramic iDrive with BMW's new Operating System X, a central display, and a multifunction steering wheel are all standard. A comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including lane keeping assist, emergency braking, and a rearview camera with panorama view, is also included.

The M Sport packages add aggressive styling, larger wheels, and sportier interior touches. You can also opt for advanced features like the Highway Assistant for hands-free driving up to 81 mph on approved roads, multifunction massage seats, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. With a dizzying array of interior trims and upholstery choices, from Veganza vegan leather to genuine 'Merino' leather, BMW is ensuring that buyers can tailor their electric SUV to their exact tastes.
