Tesla Semi specifications reveal massive power and higher price tags

Tesla

The wait for the Tesla Semi has been a long one. It has been nearly ten years since the world first saw the concept of this electric truck. For 98 months, fans and businesses wondered if the vehicle would ever truly hit the road in large numbers. A few companies have used the truck in tests, but Tesla is now moving toward mass production. New details about the truck show that it is powerful, but it will also cost more than early buyers expected.

One of the most impressive things about the new Semi is how fast it can charge. Thanks to Tesla's Megawatt Charging System, the Long Range version of the truck can handle 1.2 Megawatts of power. This truck can add enough energy in 30 minutes to charge six Model 3 sedans. Both versions of the truck can reach a 60% charge in just half an hour. This speed is vital for shipping companies that need to keep their drivers on the move.

Tesla is offering two different versions of the Semi. The first is the Standard Range model. This truck can travel about 325 miles on a full charge. The second version is the Long Range model, and this one can go up to 500 miles before it needs a recharge. These numbers are for when the truck is carrying a full load. The total weight of the truck and its cargo can reach 82,001 lb.

The company has not shared the exact size of the batteries inside the trucks, but it did share how much energy the trucks use while driving. The Semi uses about 1.06 kWh of electricity for every kilometer it travels (1.7 kWh per mile). Using simple math, we believe the Standard Range truck has a 550 kWh battery. The Long Range version likely has a massive 875 kWh battery.

The performance numbers do look good, but the price has gone up quite a bit. Back in 2017, Tesla said the trucks would cost between $150,000 and $180,000. That was a long time ago, and prices for almost everything have increased since then. Reports now suggest the Standard Range model will cost $250,000. The Long Range model will likely cost $290,000. These prices do not include taxes or extra fees.

Tesla believes the higher price is still worth it because electric trucks are cheaper to run than gas trucks. Diesel fuel is expensive, and engines with many moving parts need a lot of repairs. Electric motors are simpler and require less maintenance. Over several years, a company could save a lot of money on fuel and service. This "bottom line" is what matters most to the companies, and if the truck saves money, the high starting price becomes less of a problem.

Production is finally starting to pick up. Tesla built a new factory in Sparks, Nevada, just for the Semi. This factory started to take shape in 2024 and was nearly ready by the end of 2025. The company wants to build 50,000 of the new Semi trucks every year once the factory is running at full speed. This will help Tesla compete with other companies like Volvo, which already sell electric trucks to big businesses.

The Tesla Semi is finally moving out of the testing phase and into the real world. After years of silence, the final specifications are locked in. The truck is heavy, powerful, and very fast to charge. Even though it took nearly a decade to get here, the Semi could change how we think about shipping. If Tesla can build enough of them, these big electric rigs might become a common sight on the highway very soon.
