Volkswagen hits two million electric cars

Volkswagen just did something that used to seem impossible - the German car company officially handed over its two-millionth electric car to a customer. The blue ID.3 hatchback met its new owners at the famous Transparent Factory in Dresden. Two million is a big number, but the real story is how fast the company got there. It took Volkswagen twelve long years to sell its first million electric cars. It took only ten months to sell the second million.

This speed is almost hard to believe. In April 2025, the company celebrated hitting the one-million mark with an ID.3 GTX. Less than a year later, VW has already doubled that total. Some car companies take longer than ten months just to decide what color to paint their next model. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is pumping out electric cars like they are on a mission. It seems the "slow and steady" approach is officially dead at the VW headquarters.

Even though it is a major milestone, the journey started a long time ago. Volkswagen played around with electric Golf models all the way back in the 1980s. Those early cars were more science projects than real products. The modern era truly began in 2013 with a tiny VW e-up.

When it comes to sales, all the heavy lifting is done by the ID.4. This SUV, along with its sportier brother the ID.5, is the star of the show. Together, these two models have reached about 901,000 deliveries across the globe. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that people really like sitting high up and having extra trunk space, even when they switch to electric cars.

The ID.3 comes in second place for sales. It has sold about 628,000 units so far. This number is actually quite impressive when you consider where it is sold. Volkswagen decided that Americans and Canadians only want big SUVs, so they kept the hatchback for Europe and China. If the ID.3 were sold everywhere, that two-million mark probably would have happened even sooner.

The newest member of the family is ID.7. This larger, more expensive sedan has already added 132,000 sales to the total count. It is not as popular as the SUVs, but it shows that Volkswagen wants to sell electric cars to everyone.

Europe is the place where most of the sales are happening. Right now, about one out of every five cars sold in Europe runs on a battery, and Volkswagen is the leader in that region. Things are a bit different in the United States, where sales have slowed down as people wait for more charging stations or better prices.

Volkswagen has a busy schedule for the rest of the year. A new version of the ID.4 is coming out, and it will be called the ID.Tiguan. They are also working on smaller, more affordable electric cars - the ID. Polo and its sporty version called the ID. Polo GTI. People have been complaining that EVs are too expensive, and bringing back the Polo name as an electric car might finally give regular families a way to jump on the EV bandwagon.

There is even more hardware on the way - a new SUV called the ID. Cross is coming soon, followed by a fully electric version of the legendary Golf. The Golf is Volkswagen's most famous car, and making it electric is a huge step for the company.

At the current rate, Volkswagen will likely hit three million sales before you even have time to plan your next summer vacation. The jump from one million to two million was a sprint. The jump to three million might be even faster. It took twelve years to get the ball rolling, but now that it is moving, nothing seems to be stopping it.
