The Chinese automotive market is an incredibly tough place for foreign manufacturers, and Volkswagen experienced this pressure firsthand, reporting a painful 46.7% year-on-year sales drop in China for April. Sales numbers went down to 77,995 vehicles - a 37.8% drop compared to the previous month. To counter this downward trend, the German automaker's joint venture, Volkswagen Anhui, officially launched a new strategic product: the ID. Unyx 07.

At the heart of this fresh approach is a deep technological alliance. The ID. Unyx 07 uses the new China Electronic Architecture (CEA), a sophisticated electronic platform co-developed with local electric vehicle specialist XPeng. The new setup relies heavily on centralized computing and zonal control technology to make onboard systems run smoother.

Visually, the new EV steps far away from older, conservative Volkswagen designs. The car introduces what the company calls a "wind-breaking" design language, with an aggressive U-shaped front fascia and advanced LED matrix headlights. A distinct, illuminated golden logo sits prominently on the nose, marking a unique styling choice for this specific product lineup. The side profile shows off a sweeping, coupe-like silhouette paired with a practical hatchback rear door, dual sharp waistlines, and large 19-inch wheels.

The ID. Unyx 07 measures 191.1 inches in length, 72.9 inches in width, and 61.7 inches in height. It rides on a generous 111.3 inches wheelbase, putting it squarely in competition with popular mid-size electric cars. This long footprint allows for a spacious cabin and plenty of storage - the rear cargo area holds 25.1 ft³ of luggage. Fold the rear seats flat, and that storage space expands to an impressive 55.8 ft³, offering space that challenges many larger EVs.

Step inside the cabin, and the heavy focus on modern digital demands becomes immediately obvious. The driver looks at a 10-inch digital instrument cluster complemented by a 27-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) projected onto the windshield. The center dashboard has a crisp 15-inch floating touchscreen with a 2K resolution.

Not to be left out, the front passenger gets their own dedicated 12-inch 2K entertainment monitor. Powering these multi-screen displays is a high-performance octa-core MediaTek MT8676 chipset (which surpasses Qualcomm SA8295) running an AI-driven large language model that handles advanced semantic reasoning and accurate voice recognition.

Volkswagen didn't skimp on premium interior comforts to attract tech-focused buyers either. The cabin comes with a top-tier 12-speaker HiFi audio system and a customizable 30-color ambient lighting, and a 1.6-square-meter panoramic glass roof floods the entire interior with natural light.

On the performance front, the introductory ID. Unyx 07 relies on a single 170 kW electric motor, which translates to 228 horsepower with energy coming from a 60 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. According to China's standard CLTC testing cycle, this setup delivers a driving range of up to 347 miles on a full charge. The new electric Volkswagen tops out at an electronically governed maximum speed of 99 mph. For buyers demanding more driving distance between charging stops, Volkswagen Anhui confirmed that a variant with a larger battery will arrive on the market later this year.

Autonomous driving and safety assist features are split into two distinct tiers based on buyer preference. The standard model gets a pure vision-based solution, with six high-definition cameras, one mmWave radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to manage highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) functions. A more advanced LiDAR-based solution will also be available to support complex urban NOA driving environments, with deliveries for those laser-equipped models planned for the end of 2026. All models come standard with high-tech memory parking and cross-level autonomous parking capabilities, allowing the vehicle to navigate itself completely driverless into a spot from a distance of up to 1.2 miles.

Aggressive pricing is Volkswagen's primary weapon to capture attention of Chinese buyers - the ID. Unyx 07 officially enters the market with an incredibly competitive base price starting at RMB 109,900, which equals approximately $16,200.
