Honda Nissan

Honda and Nissan are teaming up to jointly develop standardized electronic control units (ECUs) for software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

The companies will introduce an architecture that will incorporate the jointly-developed ECUs and software in next-generation vehicles arriving from 2029 onwards. They aim to establish common specifications for core ECUs for their upcoming vehicles' electrical and electronic systems, as well as operating systems and parts of the middleware and vehicle-control software.

This agreement comes after comprehensive discussions between the two companies, that started in 2024, when they said they would jointly research next-generation software platforms.

This development comes more than a year after they abandoned merger talks. So while they are not merging anymore, they are still working closely together. Nissan's alliance partner Mitsubishi is considering joining the project and remains in talks with Honda and Nissan on potential areas of collaboration.
