Tesla’s Giga Shanghai is cranking up the production at a steady pace, the factory only produces Model 3 and Model Y and recently lowered waiting times for the entry-level Model 3 down to 4 weeks.

Now Model 3 RWD and Model 3 Performance had their waiting times cut from 12-16 weeks all the way down to 6-10 weeks. That’s a six weeks reduction bringing 3 month wait down to just over a month and a half in the best case scenario.

Model Y RWD is still showing its waiting time as 1 to 4 weeks, compared to 4 to 8 weeks in August. Clearly, Giga Shanghai supply issues are clearing up and with COVID restrictions calming down, the factory is finally starting to show its full capability.

Tesla Model Y Long Range no longer comes with a 5-month waiting time - according to Tesla’s website delivery is now expected in 4 to 10 weeks. Tesla Model Y Performance can be delivered as early as 6 weeks, whereas before customers had to wait 12 to 16 weeks.

Tesla took advantage of recent restrictions and delays and decided to upgrade the production line late in July, all modifications were completed by early August and are expected to boost the production capacity to 1.1-1.2 million units.

Tesla’s own Q2 reporting indicated that prior to the upgrades, Giga Shanghai had a 750,000 vehicle capacity, making it already Tesla’s largest factory. With the latest upgrades it further expanded its lead within the company's manufacturing facitilities.

According to industry experts, Tesla can expect its August sales to be around 77,000 vehicles in China which would make it the second-best month of 2022, after nearly 79,000 vehicles sold in June. Giga Shanghai splits its production between exports and the local market by producing export models in the first half of every quarter.

It’s good news for Chinese and global customers, it means the factory is finally nearing its potential, the supply issues have been ironed out and the buying experience is going back to the way we are used to - weeks instead of months waiting gives customers more certainty.
