Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has taken the wraps off the seventh generation of its iconic Transporter and Caravelle vans, marking a significant step into the electric era with the introduction of battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) options.

The new Transporter is available in a variety of configurations. The panel van is designed for pure goods transport, while the Kombi is tailored for passenger transport, with an optional double cab variant. Both the Kombi and panel van versions can be ordered with a high roof and an extended wheelbase for additional cargo capacity.

For those looking for a more luxurious passenger experience, Volkswagen offers the Caravelle. This model, available with seating for up to nine passengers, is positioned as a premium shuttle or taxi option. It comes in three distinct trim levels: entry-level, mid-range Life, and top-of-the-line Style. Like the Transporter, the Caravelle also offers an extended wheelbase option.

While a plug-in hybrid with a combined output of 232 PS (171 kW) is already available for order, Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce three electric drive options with power outputs ranging from 136 PS (100 kW) to 286 PS (210 kW) and a net battery capacity of 64 kWh. Additionally, a lower-powered electric version with a smaller battery is in the works for urban delivery applications. The all-electric models will be rear-wheel drive, with an all-wheel drive version planned for a later date.

The new Transporter and Caravelle retain the distinctive design cues, including a high dash panel, elevated seat position, and ergonomic controls. The vans have grown in size compared to their predecessors, offering increased load capacity. The maximum stowage volume for the standard wheelbase is now 204.8 ft³, while the long wheelbase and high roof variants can accommodate up to 318 ft³ of cargo.

Volkswagen has generously equipped the new Transporter and Caravelle models with a range of standard features. These include LED headlights and tail lights, an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, keyless start, and a suite of driver assistance technologies.

Pre-sales for the new Transporter have already commenced in Europe with a starting price of $43,090. However, customers will have to wait until Q1 2025 for the official market launch.

For those looking to take their vans for an impromptu off-road adventure, for the first time Volkswagen is introducing the PanAmericana equipment package. Available for both the Transporter and Caravelle, the PanAmericana adds rugged styling elements, such as all-terrain trims, protective film wraps, and illuminated stainless steel inlays. It also features exclusive seat fabrics and black high-gloss dash panel applications.
