Xiaomi Announcement

Following the launch of the SU7 sedan, Xiaomi has now officially unveiled its second EV, the YU7. It is a mid-to-large size electric SUV that appears ready to challenge established players, especially Tesla's popular Model Y.

The YU7 cuts an imposing figure, measuring 196.8 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 63.3 inches tall, with a generous 118 inches wheelbase. These dimensions make it noticeably larger than the current Model Y. Xiaomi offers the YU7 in nine exterior colors, including a striking green inspired by Colombian emeralds, alongside orange and metallic titanium finishes.

Buyers can choose between 19-inch and 20-inch wheels. The vehicle's weight ranges from 4,718 lb to 5,423 lb, depending on the specific configuration. Clever design touches include inward-folding electric door handles with ambient lighting and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing for keyless entry and trunk access using a smartphone.

Step inside the five-seat YU7 and the focus on luxury and technology becomes apparent. The cabin is fully lined with leather, featuring Nappa-wrapped "zero gravity" front seats that can recline to 123 degrees and offer 10-point massage functions for ultimate comfort. Rear passengers get seats that can be electrically adjusted up to 135 degrees and a 6.68-inch touchscreen for controlling climate, music, and navigation.

Dominating the dashboard is a massive 1.1-meter-wide "HyperVision" display, made up of three Mini LED screens. This system integrates driving information, media playback, blind-spot monitoring, and customizable widgets. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip is powering this giant display, ensuring a swift boot-up in just 1.35 seconds and over-the-air software updates in as little as 15 minutes.

Xiaomi is rolling out three versions of the YU7. The entry-level YU7 RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive) features a single electric motor producing 235 kilowatts of power and 389 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just under 5.9 seconds, with a top speed of 149 mph. Next is the YU7 Pro AWD (All-Wheel Drive), which uses dual motors for a combined output of 365 kW and 509 lb-ft, quickening the 0-62 mph dash to 4.27 seconds while maintaining the 149 mph top speed.

The range-topping YU7 Max AWD boasts a powerful dual-motor setup delivering 508 kW and 639 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in a little bit over 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 157 mph.

Range and charging are critical for EVs, and Xiaomi seems to have prioritized this. Company founder and CEO Lei Jun stated that range is a primary consideration for electric car buyers. All YU7 models are built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform, which allows for rapid 5.2C charging speeds. This means the YU7 can potentially add up to 385 miles of range in just 15 minutes of charging.

The RWD model comes with a 96.3 kWh LFP battery, offering a CLTC range of 519 miles. The Pro AWD variant uses the same 96.3 kWh LFP pack for a 478 miles range. The top-tier Max AWD is equipped with a 101.7 kWh NCM battery, providing a CLTC range of 472 miles. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y variants in China offer CLTC ranges of 368 miles and 447 miles.

Safety and smart driving features are also prominent. The YU7 uses a Nvidia Drive AGX Thor chip with 700 TOPS of computing power for its assisted driving systems. It also features air suspension for a smoother ride. The vehicle's structure includes a 2200 MPa ultra-high-strength steel integrated roll cage, a 20-in-1 aluminum die-cast front frame, and a steel-aluminum hybrid body dubbed an "armor cage." The battery pack itself has a reinforced shell with a bullet-resistant coating.

Xiaomi reports conducting over 50 passive safety tests and has structurally enhanced the A and B pillars. Standard on all YU7s are LiDAR sensors, 4D mmWave radar, and ALD-coated anti-glare cameras, all supporting Xiaomi's in-house developed end-to-end assisted driving system. The YU7's debut was reportedly delayed from an earlier April slot following a review of safety protocols after an incident involving one of Xiaomi's autonomous test vehicles.

Xiaomi positions the YU7 as a "luxury performance SUV" for the "elite of the times" - that's the official language. While the vehicle has been officially debuted, pricing details are expected at a launch event scheduled for July 2025. Lei Jun has, however, dismissed rumors of a starting price around RMB 199,000 (approximately $27,600). The YU7 will enter the market in July, setting up a direct confrontation with the Tesla Model Y, which used to be a dominant force in China, but its sales dropped by 19.61 percent year-on-year for the first four months of 2025.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the EV scene, Xiaomi has already demonstrated its potential with its first electric car, the SU7 sedan. Launched in March 2024, the SU7 has reportedly accumulated over 258,000 unit deliveries. This early success propelled Xiaomi to become the eighth-largest global battery electric vehicle (BEV) seller in the first quarter of the year, holding a 2.8 percent market share with just that single model.
