2024 Fiat 500e lands in US

Fiat

Fiat's 500e little hatchback is making a comeback in the United States after a long hiatus. It is to be the lightest electric vehicle on American roads and come with a $34,095 price tag.

One of the standout features of the 2024 Fiat 500e is its weight - at just over 3,000 lb, it proudly claims the title of the lightest passenger BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) in the US market. The company claims this “featherweight” status is thanks to Fiat's dedication to crafting a compact and efficient electric car - apparently nothing to do with the fact that almost all EVs available in the US are significantly larger and pack bigger batteries.

The old 500e, which waved goodbye to American shores in 2019, covered a paltry 84 miles on a single charge. In comparison, the new 500e boasts an EPA-estimated range of 149 miles. That's nearly double its predecessor, if still not impressive.

The 500e supports up to 85 kW DC charging, and you can go from 0-80% battery in just around 35 minutes. If you're using a Level 2 (11kW) charger, a full charge takes approximately 4.25 hours. To sweeten the deal, Fiat is offering buyers the choice of a free home charger or charge credits through Free2Move Charge.

The 2024 Fiat 500e comes with 118 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque supplied to the front wheels, resulting in an 9-second zero to 62 mph time. However, if maximizing range is your priority, Sherpa mode dials back the power output to 76 hp and limits the top speed to 50 mph.

Fiat has included options to replicate the coasting sensation of a traditional internal combustion engine car and a regenerative braking effect that allows for one-pedal driving.

The 2024 Fiat 500e may look familiar with its split headlights and flush-fit door handles, but it's an entirely new car built on a dedicated EV platform. The interior gets a modern upgrade, featuring a body-color dash panel that pays homage to the 1950s original. It also includes a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and higher quality materials than its predecessor. However, whether the car's digital greeting tune remains entertaining after multiple listens remains to be seen.

Unlike its predecessor, which was only available in California and Oregon, the new Fiat 500e will be accessible across the entire United States. The buying process is streamlined as well, with customers able to place their orders through the Fiat Live Store. The initial offering includes the 500e RED Edition, featuring a stylish red paint job and 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Even better, a portion of the proceeds from the RED Edition will go to charitable causes supported by RED.
