BYD

BYD has just teased its latest model - a mid-size electric sedan called the e7. This new vehicle adds to BYD's already extensive portfolio of EVs, in a sign that the company has no intention of slowing down its aggressive push to maintain leadership in China. The e7's reveal follows a series of new model releases and previews from BYD as the company diversifies its offerings.

The BYD e7, as revealed in MIIT regulatory filings, measures 188.2 inches in length, 74.8 inches in width, and 59.6 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 111 inches. The vehicle is powered by a single electric motor, delivering a peak power of 100 kW. This motor allows the e7 to reach a top speed of 93 mph - not a speed demon by any standards but it's plenty enough for most daily driving needs.

Battery options for the e7 include 48 kWh and 57.6 kWh packs, offering CLTC ranges of 280 miles and 323 miles, respectively. These ranges, although theoretical and very optimistic, promise a decent balance between affordability and practicality for electric cars. The e7 is clearly an affordable model aimed at first-time EV buyers - enough to give them a taste of electric driving without breaking the bank.

BYD typically names its models after Chinese dynasties or marine life, but the e series is an exception. The e7's introduction comes after the e2 Honor Edition, launched in March 2024, which had a starting price of RMB 89,800 (approximately $12,360). This specific model is no longer listed on BYD's website, but its price suggests the e7 will be priced very similarly.

BYD has been actively adjusting its pricing and inventory, recently offering discounts on several hybrid models within its Ocean series. The discounts meant to help clear older vehicle stock following the introduction of Smart Driving updates. The e7 joins a flurry of recent releases from BYD, including the Qin L EV sedan, the Sealion 05 EV SUV, and the Denza N9 SUV.

BYD is ruthlessly focused on expanding its presence in the Chinese EV market. The company's diverse range, from affordable sedans to luxury SUVs, gives it access to a broad spectrum of consumers. The e7 will undoubtedly be another significant addition to BYD's portfolio, with its blend of practicality, affordability, and no-frills simplicity.
