GM Buick Ultium

We don’t have much to go on - Buick China was careful enough to show just three pictures but that is enough to wet our appetites. The vehicle has been named as Electra-X Concept and it is Buick’s first SUV to be developed using Ultium platform from GM.

It is clearly a follow-up to the Electra prototype we first saw in 2020. We won’t have to wait long to see the Electra-X - Buick is planning to unveil it during its Buick China Brand Day in just a couple of weeks.

Do not be fooled - this isn’t the vehicle Buick USA teased back in February this year. Despite the LED signature being similar, the lights are completely different, pointing to the Chinese market getting a completely different vehicle or at least one with modified design. Buick USA is not releasing any information or images about the Electra-X which makes this case even stronger.

According to Buick China, the new car is designed to take the future electric mobility to the next level, it will provide safer and more desirable EV experience and will focus on insights and desires of local consumers. That last bit again reaffirms the idea of two separate models - one for Chinese and one for the US market.

We can expect distinct styling and roomy and airy interior - which is what every EV maker these days is aiming for. Buick Electra-X will introduce Super Cruise driver assist technology and something called Virtual Cockpit System.

Super Cruise has been going through a lot of development, initially it was only available on motorways and only in the mapped and approved areas. It makes it fall far behind competition but GM is taking a safe approach and the latest iteration should be interesting.

Only a couple of weeks left to find out all the details and as always - the Internet can’t keep the secret so there will be more photos coming out between now and the official unveiling. As soon as it happens you will be first to know.

20202 Buick Electra had a truly floating cockpit and airy interior - will we see that in Electra-X? 20202 Buick Electra had a truly floating cockpit and airy interior - will we see that in Electra-X?

Although Equinox was announced much earlier Electra-X may beat it to the market - it is Chinese market only vehicle and it will be the first SUV there. Is it possible that the two share more than just the architecture? Quite possible - yes.
