Ford

In its most recent press release, Ford announced a new ambitious project with the Korean battery manufacturer SK and EcoPro, which is also a Korean-based firm focusing on battery and EV-related R&D. The three companies have started the construction of a new massive battery cathode factory in Quebec, Canada.

The factory requires a huge $885 million investment and spans across 280,000 square-meter land with a six-floor building on-site housing about 345 employees - from sales to engineers. The factory is located in Quebec's so-called battery valley as there are other battery-related facilities in the area. Interestingly enough, this isn't the only battery plant from Ford and SK, as they have already announced or built other facilities in the US.

The factory will start production of high-quality Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) cathodes for rechargeable EV batteries and thanks to EcoPro's core shell gradient (CSG) technology, the trio believes it has an advantage over its existing competitors. If everything goes to plan, production should commence sometime in 2026 and plans to produce 45,000 tonnes of CAM per year.

The factory is crucial for Ford's ambitions in the region and it will help the company secure the full $7,500 federal tax credit for its vehicles. After the new federal tax credit rules at least 50% of the battery components need to be sourced from the North America. And battery cathodes, in general, are pretty scarce on the continent.

If you know where these raw materials are mined from and how poor the people are... After all who cares, someone has to do it right?
