Kia

Kia is officially bringing its smallest electric car yet to the streets of Europe. The brand opened the order books for the Kia EV2, a compact crossover that promises to make EVs much more affordable for the average person. Many people worry that electric cars cost way too much, and Kia is trying to prove them wrong by setting prices lower than most expected. The first lucky owners will get their keys as early as next month.

The car comes from Kia's big factory in Slovakia. This plant already builds the EV4, so adding the EV2 to the mix shows how serious the company is about selling more electric cars in Europe. Soohang Chang, the head of Kia Europe, says this proves the company can be flexible and technical at the same time. By making these cars locally, Kia can get them to customers faster and keep the costs under control.

In Germany, the Kia EV2 starts from $31,200. Most people thought the price would be at least $35,000, so this was a nice surprise for car shoppers. If you don't want to buy the car outright, Kia is offering lease deals for as little as $280 per month. Orders are also opening in other countries like Spain, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

Over in the UK, the pricing story is a bit more detailed. The base model, called the Air edition, starts at $33,296, but this includes a dedicated "Reservation Saving" of $5,150 that Kia is offering right now. Kia claims the EV2 offers some of the best driving range for any car in this price bracket.

Buyers have four different versions to choose from: Light, Air, Earth, and GT-Line. There are also two different battery sizes. The smaller battery is 42.2 kWh and gives the car a range of about 197 miles on a full charge. If you need to go further, you can pick the larger 61 kWh battery. Depending on the motor, this bigger battery can go between 256 miles and 281 miles before it needs to plug in again.

The Kia EV2 is built on the E-GMP platform, the same foundation used for the Hyundai Ioniq series. But to keep the price low, Kia used a 400V system instead of the more expensive 800V system found in the bigger Kia EV6. This means it charges a little slower, but it still isn't a snail. It can go from 10% to 80% power in about 30 minutes if you use a 118 kW fast charger. The much pricier EV6 does that same jump in about 18 minutes.

Inside the car, Kia kept things simple but modern. Every model has two large 12.3-inch screens for the driver and the media, plus a smaller 5-inch screen just for the air conditioning. Interestingly, the standard car comes with a "Lite" version of the software. This means it does not have a built-in map system. Instead, Kia expects you to just plug in your phone and use Google Maps.

The Kia EV2 is quite small on the outside - it measures just over 157 inches long, making it shorter than a Volkswagen ID.3. But because the floor is completely flat, there is a lot of room inside. Kia says the EV2 has the best legroom in its class. You also get a decent amount of storage in the back, with 14.2 ft³ of cargo space for your groceries or gear.

Right now, the factory in Slovakia is building the versions with the smaller battery. If you want the long-range battery or the sporty GT-Line version, you will have to wait until June 2026 for production to start. This little SUV is stepping into a crowded market. It will have to fight for customers against brands like BYD and MG, but with its low price and high-tech interior, Kia hopes the EV2 will help the company beat the sales records it set in 2025.
