Jetta X Concept teases a new chapter for Volkswagen in China

Volkswagen is taking a big step with its Jetta brand in China. Jetta used to be known for gas-powered vehicles, but since it became a brand of its own under the FAW-Volkswagen partnership, it shared a first look at its newest idea, the Jetta X. This vehicle is a concept that shows where the company wants to go next - the growing world of electric cars.

The company shared a poster on Friday, and the Jetta X will officially show its face on April 21. This will happen during a media night hosted by the Volkswagen Group. We only have a teaser image for now, but the shape tells a clear story. It looks like a larger sporty SUV or a crossover. Everyone seems to want an SUV these days, so this choice makes sense for the brand.

This comes at a busy time for the Jetta brand. It recently started a new life in Chengdu, which is in the Sichuan province, under a new name: FAW Volkswagen Jetta Automotive Technology Co Ltd. Having its own company gives the brand more freedom. It can make decisions faster to keep up with other EVs in the Chinese market. Volkswagen still helps by sharing its global research and electric car parts.

The Jetta X is part of a massive plan to change how the brand works. Jetta wants to launch five brand-new models by the year 2028. Out of those five, four will be New Energy Vehicles, or NEVs. This category includes both electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The company is moving away from gas-only engines very quickly.

We do not have the exact price or the final dimensions for the Jetta X yet. However, we can look at the current Jetta lineup to make a good guess. Most Jetta SUVs in China, like the VS5 and VS7, measure between 14.4 ft and 15.1 ft in length. They usually cost between RMB 85,000 and RMB 120,000 - roughly $11,700 to $16,500. The new electric versions will likely cost a bit more because batteries are expensive.

The Jetta brand has big dreams for its sales numbers. It wants to sell between 400,000 and 500,000 vehicles every single year. That is a lot of cars for a brand that is still finding its feet. To reach that goal, they need these new EVs to be a hit with young buyers. These drivers want high-tech features but do not want to spend a fortune.

The first real NEV from this new group will appear soon. We expect to see it for the first time in the third quarter of this year. If everything goes according to plan, people in China can buy one in the fourth quarter. It is a fast timeline, but the car market in China moves at lightning speed. If you blink, you might miss a dozen new car launches.

Volkswagen is smart to use the Jetta name this way. It is a name people already trust. By giving the brand its own technology center, they can build electric cars that fit exactly what local drivers want. The Jetta X is the first major proof of this plan. It shows that the "affordable" brand is ready to stop using old technology and start using the latest electric platforms.
