BMW Lucid Mercedes MG Toyota Xpeng Range test

The Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) conducts two real-world EV range tests each year - one in the summer and one in the winter. The summer test just concluded, and the results are quite fascinating.

BMW iX3 topples real-world range test charts beating WLTP estimates

The top performer turned out to be the BMW iX3 with a real-world range test of 485 miles, and impressively it's 7 miles more than the WLTP-rated range. The WLTP range is usually a tad more generous than the EPA standard that the US uses. Either way, the iX3 beat expectations by 1.5% even over that figure.

The Lucid Gravity took the second place with 447 miles, but 3.7% below its WLTP rating of 465 miles. The Mercedes CLA, the GLC 400 and the Xpeng X9 round up the top five.

Rank Model WLTP Total Range Deviation Deviation (%)
1 BMW iX3 478 miles 485 miles 7 miles +1.5%

21 Hyundai Inster 224 miles 232 miles 8 miles +3.5%
22 KGM Musso 235 miles 229 miles -6 miles -2.6%
23 Dongfeng Vigo 211 miles 216 miles 5 miles +2.3%
24 Kia EV2 191 miles 202 miles 11 miles +5.4%

When it comes to deviation, the MG IM6 was the worst offender, its 277 miles achievement coming 11.7% lower than its official WLTP rating. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Xpeng X9, which took fifth place in the overall range test, was the vehicle with the highest positive deviation, posting an 11.4% higher result than its WLTP or 401 miles on a single charge.

Interestingly, the Toyota bZ4X came with virtually no deviation from its official 314 miles rating.

Keep in mind that even if NAF's range test is designed to give you the most accurate, real-world range test results, your experience may vary. Factors like elevation, weather conditions and the owner's driving style can heavily influence your driving range.
